LARRY
BARTLEY
Peacefully,
on May 20, 2013, Larry Bartley passed away at the Health Sciences Centre at the
age of 54 years. Larry was predeceased by his father Delmar and brother Keith.
Larry
leaves to mourn the love of his life Lucille Bruce, who he always referred to
as his "angel", stepdaughter Angie (Max), and grandchildren Mackaila
and Lukas. He will be forever missed by his mother Florence, sister Sharlene
(Roy Yerex), as well as his brothers Daniel (Margie and Christopher) and Murray
(Joann). He left behind his loving mother-in-law Jeanne Bruce, seven
sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law. There are numerous nieces and nephews
who will miss Larry deeply and the joy and enthusiasm for life that he brought.
Larry was born in the Westwood area of Winnipeg and attended Westwood
Collegiate, prior to attending the University of Manitoba where he graduated
with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education Degree. He worked at the
Manitoba Youth Centre and Seven Oaks Youth Centre, and later taught at Maples
Collegiate from 1989 to present. He taught art to the high school students
therein, and his love for teaching inspired too many students to mention. This
led to his passion for creating beautiful pottery, which now adorns the homes
of many of his family and friends.
Larry was
an incredible athlete and played competitive hockey in the Interlake league of
Manitoba, later continuing to play recreational hockey right up to the end of
his life.
He loved
all sports, including skiing, golf, fishing, and hunting. It was in St.
Laurent, Manitoba that Larry was the happiest, where he enjoyed peaceful and
joyous times with his angel Lucille, along with his family, friends, and dogs
Maya and Nikko. He travelled extensively through Europe and the United States,
and recently purchased a residence in Phoenix, Arizona where he immediately
made close friends and enjoyed his love of golf. He went with his students to
Europe to study art and the world's greatest artists, and took great
inspiration from young people throughout his life and career. Larry taught many
students over the 28 years of his teaching (and coaching) career. They always
felt his infectious desire for continuous learning and strong zest for life,
along with the care he provided and talent he fostered.
Most of
all, Larry loved people. He never wanted to be alone and always wanted to be
surrounded by those he loved. Although we are deeply saddened by the loss of
Larry, we know that he is now in God's hands and is watching over all of us. We
would like to thank Dr. Maksymiuk and Dr. Butler for their great compassion and
understanding. The care they provided to Larry was exceptional. Specifically,
we want to thank Dr. Leylek, who enjoyed a very special bond with Larry while
supporting Larry from the beginning of his treatment, to the end. For that, we
will be forever grateful. We want to thank the incredible nursing staff and
Palliative Care team at the rehabilitation centre at the Health Sciences
Centre. You are all so kind and loving.
On behalf
of Larry, he asks that all of you live life to the fullest. In lieu of flowers,
please send any donations in memory of our dearest Larry to the CancerCare
Manitoba Foundation, at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.
A
celebration of Larry's life will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.
at Maples Collegiate, 1330 Jefferson Avenue, Winnipeg.
