EVELYN
RUTH RUSSELL
(nee
DOWN)
September
19, 1921 - May 1, 2013
Peacefully, on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at
Misericordia Place with family by her side, Ruth Russell passed away at the age
of 91 years.
Ruth was born and raised in Rounthwaite, Manitoba
where her beloved parents, Jack and Nellie Down (Banning) operated a grocery
store and post office. After attending school in the village, she trained at
Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, becoming a Registered Nurse in 1946.
Ruth married William Robert (Bob) Russell in 1949 and they lived in Brandon
before moving to Winnipeg.
Ruth loved being a nurse, and took great
pride in her profession. For over 40 years she cared respectfully for others,
worked as part of health teams, and shared her knowledge with trainees and
professionals alike. In the early years, she particularly loved working in the
neo-natal wards. Later, she spent 17 years as a head nurse of geriatric
rehabilitation on the Third Floor of King Edward Hospital where her nickname
was “Dr. Russell.” She was a member of the Eastern Star
and the Winnipeg South Osborne Legion and enjoyed the fellowship of many
friends within these associations.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Rozlyn, her
grandsons, Robert and William Turk (Raina), and her twin great-granddaughters,
Miriam and Ruth. She is also survived by her brother Alan and his wife, Mary of
California, her sister-in-law Agnes Down of Souris and her many nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Bob, sister Caroline, brothers
John, Jim, Leonard and Harry and her nephew, Jimmy.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday,
May 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Misericordia Place, 44 Furby Street, Winnipeg, MB
We would like to thank the staff of
Misericordia Place for their care as well as her family and friends for their
support and love.
In
lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ruth’s memory to the Misericordia
Foundation, c/o Misericordia Place Spiritual Care.
