MATTHEW
JOHN GARTH NOSWORTHY
April
5, 1951 – January 9, 2014
After a short, but courageous battle with
cancer, it is with love and great sadness, that we announce the passing of
Garth Nosworthy on Thursday, January 9, 2014, at the age of 62 years. Garth’s
final days were spent surrounded by family, friends and the unwavering love and
dedication of his wife of 40 years of marriage, Leslie Nosworthy.
Left
to cherish Garth’s memory are his wife Leslie; daughter Lindsay; son Gregory;
brother Donald Nosworthy; as well as many lifelong friends and family. He was
predeceased by his parents, Matthew Nosworthy; Jean Nosworthy; step-mom Dorothy
Nosworthy; and his sister Ann MacKellar.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Garth
attended Montrose Elementary School, Grant Park High School and the University
of Winnipeg. He learned to play guitar starting at the age of five. By the time he was twelve years old, Garth
was playing in The Sonics, TC and the Provincials, and then The Mongrels. Being
an avid part of the 60’s Winnipeg music rock scene, The Mongrels, managed by
Lorne Saifer and produced by Randy Bachman, signed with RCA USA and then
Capital Records USA. Over the past twenty years, he continued his love of music
and performing which led to the incarnation of the Family/Children’s
Entertainers “Just Kiddin”. Just Kiddin’
released three CDs, two of which were nominated for a Prairie Music Award and
one “Imagination” won the Prairie Music Award for Outstanding Children’s
Entertainment.
Garth became an air traffic
controller on January 17, 1972 where he worked until his retirement in January
24, 2007. Starting in Thunder Bay Tower and then onto Regina Tower, Garth
returned to Winnipeg Tower in 1974 and then ultimately worked in the Winnipeg
Area Control Centre, Terminal, as a Supervisor, until his retirement. After
retirement, he returned to work for two years, teaching air traffic control,
which Garth enjoyed immensely. He was a man of many talents and of great commitment.
He will be remembered for his quick wit and fabulous sense of humor. Garth’s
loyalty, generosity of his time and spirit will outlive his memory. He worked
tirelessly as President of Ecole Tuxedo Park Parent Council to successfully prevent
the school’s closure. Garth coached his son’s hockey teams over the years and
was loved by the kids he coached. Garth
was always running someone’s campaign, planning retirement parties and tributes
to anyone he felt deserving. Nothing was ever too much trouble and he had a
heart of gold.
Leslie and Garth had the opportunity
to travel over the past few years to Europe and more recently New York where
they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. The many family
vacations to Hawaii were his favorite and he felt so fortunate to have that
time together with Leslie, Lindsay and Greg. Garth was an incredible father,
always being there for his kids at every ballet recital, swimming lesson,
hockey game and band concert. His family was his life and he will be dearly
missed.
A Celebration of Garth’s life will
be held on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican
Church, 3830 Roblin Boulevard.
The family would like to extend
their sincere appreciation to the staff at Health Sciences Centre for their
compassionate care. Also thank you to our dear friends, Cliff Levi and Pat
Benjaminson for all of your help at a very difficult time.
