GRACE
JOSELINE DAVIDSON
It is with heartfelt
sadness that we announce the passing of Grace Davidson on Monday, February 24,
2014 (her mother’s birthday) at Riverview Health Centre after a brief illness
with cancer at the age of 78 years. Mom waited patiently for her cousin and “sister”
Julia to arrive and then she passed away peacefully surrounded by her family.
Mom is survived by her
loving husband of 59 years Rex;
cherished children Trevor (Patricia) and Venetia (Denis); beloved
grandchildren Allen, Thomas, Jeremy and Alicia, Colin, Mathieu and Nicole,
David (Alison, Devon and Ava), Marc (Kristen), Christine (Kirby and precious
Mila); sister-in-law Marie; niece Lucia; nephew Rodney; and numerous relatives
and friends around the world. She was predeceased by her father Robert; mother
Maria; brothers Robert and Albert and sister Pauline.
On September 4, 1935
Mom was born in Cape Town, South Africa, the youngest of four siblings. She had
a wonderful childhood and most of her early years were spent dancing-she had a
passion for ballet and she excelled at it. As a result of her excellence in
dance, at the age of 11 years she was one of four young girls chosen to present
flowers to Princess Elizabeth on her 21st birthday on April 21, 1947
while she visited Cape Town. In Mom’s older years, she took great pride in
teaching others to dance including her daughter.
Mom immigrated to
Canada with her family in 1974 and although she never liked the cold winters,
she knew that this move was right for her family and that they would flourish
with the opportunities for a better life. For this, we will always be grateful.
Mom always worked outside the home to support
her family. She was a hardworking, loyal employee with a strong work ethic. In
her last position before retirement at Manitoba Housing, she made long lasting
friendships and these friends were ever present in the last days of her life.
Family was everything to Mom and she was
intensely proud of everything her children and grandchildren accomplished.
Nothing made her more proud than to watch her son, grandsons and granddaughter
play soccer, listen and watch her grandsons sing and perform and watch her
daughter and granddaughter dance. Mom loved to cook and Sunday family dinners
were a joy to her. She also spent her spare time knitting and friends and
family were blessed with examples of her knitting talent. Mom was an avid
Winnipeg Jets fan and she never missed watching a game.
Mom possessed a quiet
inner strength and when faced with her illness in the last month, she had more
concern for Dad and those around her than herself. Mom’s kindness, generosity
and unconditional love were qualities that everyone admired and she has now
passed these qualities onto us so that we may live by her examples.
Our Mom received
excellent care from her health care team of Dr. Hartley and Brenda, Dr.
Johnston and Erin, Dr. Tan and Dr. Chowdhury.
A very special thank you to Dr. Garcia, Dr. Koetting and the amazing
team of nurses and caregivers at Riverview Health Centre (3E) who made Mom so
comfortable in her last week of life. To all of you who touched our hearts
during this time, thank you.
A Celebration of Mom’s
Life will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in St. James
Anglican Church, 195 Collegiate Street.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made
to CancerCare Manitoba (Molecular Testing) or to Riverview Health Centre in
Mom’s honour.
