CLAIRE MARIE PRENDERGAST
(nee JEROME)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved
wife, mother and grandmother, Claire Prendergast, at Deer lodge Centre on Wednesday,
February 19, 2014 after a brief but valiant fight with pneumonia.
Claire is lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband of
fifty-four years, John; sons Michael and Robert; daughter Louise (Bruce);
granddaughter Lauren; and grandsons Bryson, Coleton and Liam. She will also be
missed by her very special cousin, Pierre Nantel of Boucherville, QC.
On July 30, 1937, Claire was born at Notre Dame Hospital in Montreal to
her parents Romeo and Lucille Jerome (nee Brosseau). Her elementary schooling
was taken in French and she attended an English high school, resulting in her
being fluently bilingual. In September 1955 Claire entered the 3-year nursing
program at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal. Upon graduating as a R.N. in June
1958 she immediately began her nursing career at the Montreal Children’s
Hospital working in the premature ward.
In May 1959 Claire married her husband, John, who was a RCAF navigator
based at Rockcliffe on the outskirts of Ottawa. They had been raised on the
same street in Montreal and Claire had attended high school with his sisters.
The marriage led to a temporary stoppage of her nursing career as she travelled
with John and raised a family on successive postings after Ottawa to Trenton,
ON, Rivers, MB, St Hubert, QC, Comox, BC, Canberra, Australia and finally and
permanently to Winnipeg in 1976.
Now that her children were in high school Claire felt it was time to
resume her nursing career, which she greatly missed. After an extensive nursing
refresher course at Red River College, Claire in 1978 began working at Golden
West Centennial Lodge. She immensely enjoyed looking after the elderly
residents. Sadly, the onset of severe arthritis forced her to retire from
nursing in 1992.
Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 10:30 a.m.
in St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 320 St. Charles Street with Rev. Fr. Paul
Tinguely presiding. For those who wish, viewing will be held prior to Mass.
Interment will follow in St. Charles Parish Cemetery immediately following the
Mass. Also following the Mass, a reception will be held in the Church hall.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the nursing and
administrative staff of Deer Lodge Hospital Lodge 5 for the wonderful care and
concern they showed for Claire during the 13 months that she was a resident.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that, if desired, a donation can
be made in Claire’s name to the Arthritis Society or the Heart and Stroke
Foundation.
