GORDON CHARLES GRICE
June 17, 1923 - September 5, 2012
It is with sadness the family announces the passing of Gordon Charles Grice on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Golden West Centennial Lodge. Loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Major Grice served as a Salvation Army officer for many years with appointments in various centres across Canada including Hamilton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Saskatoon. Left to forever cherish Gordon's memory are his wife Violet; sons David (Lynn) and Donald; grandchildren David (Allison), Jeremy, and Rebecca; sisters Joan and Janet (Miron); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents William and Althea Grice; brothers Ken, Harold, Fred, and sister Jean. Gordon was born in Windsor, Ontario and grew up in nearby Roseland savouring the joys of country living, fields and ponds to explore, and trees to climb. After high school, he spent time at the Ford Trade School and also served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He discovered a passion for teaching children and attended Normal School in London. Gordon's teaching career took him to various locations in Ontario. Friends readily knew Gordon not only loved a good joke, he also knew how to tell one. He could see the humour in many situations, often responding with hearty, unrestrained laughter. He loved history, especially events and details related to the Second World War, and the sinking of the Titanic. He made events come alive as he recounted the details with great enthusiasm. Gordon incorporated both his sense of humour and love of history in his effective preaching style. His strength as a Salvation Army officer was his pastoral care for people of all ages. He had the ability to show a genuine interest in the details of people's lives. On Tuesday, September 11, 2012 Gordon's Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Heritage Park Temple, 825 School Road, Winnipeg. For those who wish viewing will begin at 1:00 p.m. Gordon's family has been deeply touched by the wonderful care shown by the Golden West team and wishes to express heartfelt thanks. His family also wishes to say thank you to all who have visited and supported him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army Heritage Park Temple or The Salvation Army Golden West Centennial Lodge.Wojcik's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
