Wojcik's Funeral Home - Charles Burchill Funeral Arrangements

CHARLES (EUGENE) BURCHILL
After a courageous battle with Parkinson's it is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our husband/father Charles Eugene Burchill on Saturday, September 29, 2012. Left to cherish Eugene's memory are his loving wife, Margaret of 55 years; four children; brothers and sisters; grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. Eugene, or Gene, as he was known to his friends and family was born and raised on a homestead farm near Meadow Lake, SK, in 1932. He graduated with a BSc (Honours) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1956, a Masters Degree in 1961 and a PhD from the University of Leeds (England) in 1967. He taught at the University of Victoria (then Victoria College) for six years and for another 31 years at the University of Manitoba where he taught Chemistry. Gene retired in 1997. He will be remembered for his generous tutelage. He was a great influence on many of his students. Gene was very proud of his students and enjoyed meeting them again after they had settled into their new careers to see where life and chemistry had taken them. Gene also kept busy with multiple interests including home brewing, cycling, running and swimming. He won many awards for his amateur winemaking. In his 40s he began training and competed in/with the Masters Swim Club, the Manitoba Marathon and the 'Iron Man' 100 mile bike ride, among others. During the 1970s and 80s Gene sang with the Chorus of the Manitoba Opera and had a small role as the Customs Officer in La Bohème. After his retirement he took up fabric art creations, a hobby he was passionate about until his death. He had a 10-week exhibition of his work in the Piano Nobile Gallery of the Centennial Concert Hall in 2006. A Celebration of thanks and remembrance will be held on Monday, October 8, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in Epiphany Lutheran Church, 200 Dalhousie Drive. A special thank you to Dr. Hobson, Gene's neurologist at Deer Lodge Hospital and to the staff at Prime Health Centre for Seniors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of Manitoba, 302 171 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 1M4.
