ELIZABETH (BETTE) MILDRED SCOTT
(nee CALDWELL) 1924 - 2012
Peacefully, after a lengthy illness on the morning of Monday, October 1, 2012 with Diane at her side, Bette passed away with one last breath and love in her heart! Bette leaves behind her daughter-in-law Luanne (Skip); granddaughter Corrine; great-grandson Jaxson; sons Dick (Merrilynn), and Dan (Betty); grandsons Andrew and Jeff; daughter Diane; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bev (1995) and oldest son Skip (2009). Born in Morse, Saskatchewan in 1924, Bette spent her early years growing up in Beausejour, Manitoba where she loved chumming with her pals, going to dances at Grand Beach and swimming at Hobans Park. In her mid teens she and her family moved to 18th Street in Brandon where she finished school, worked and met Pop! They married in 1943 and started their family, three boys back to back to back, made for great times, busy schedules and lots of stories! In September of 1961 the family moved from Brandon to Winnipeg, new friends, new schools and new neighbourhood meant all sorts of wonderful changes and opportunities. In September of 1964, when the boys were all in high school, Bette and Bev added a girl to the family! Bette would often remark with her wonderful wit, "that's the last New Year's Eve party I'll ever go to"! All in fun, she absolutely unconditionally loved her kids every single day! She was so proud of each of their accomplishments always boasting to her friends, just like every proud mother! Mom and Pop had a great partnership; they supported each other and made it work. Bette missed Pop a great deal when he passed but always the strong soul she carried on! Bette loved to cook and she was darn good at it, all those family dinners were grand! She loved to make her fancy sandwiches for church tea's and showers, her baking was legendary (the girl's at the bank may attest to that), always humble she would just say "it's the pastry"! She loved a night out at bingo, telling a story the first time or the tenth, always loved going for a coffee just to chat, but her passion outside of her kids was bridge! She enjoyed her bridge nights the most, loved the pageantry, the game and the friendships! Mom (and Pop) worked hard, gave much and expected little. She was extremely loyal and caring, she believed in good manners, being grateful, putting in a good days work and that a solid handshake was a very important skill to have. She kept a neat and tidy house, always dressed up and had her hair done once a week regardless! Bette enjoyed her journey and handled the challenges with grace and poise. She was appreciative, patient and frank, but never complained. She lived by her mantra; "By the grace of God go I" and she did just that! She will be missed, Love you Mom! As per Bette's request, there will only be a casual reception on Monday, October 15, 2012 at the Assiniboia Golf Club from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to allow friends and family to come together and celebrate her life! She would also love it if a few of her friends would play a round or two of bridge; tables and cards will be provided. Thank you to; The nurses and staff at the Golden West Centennial Lodge, Victoria General Hospital, Rosewood Retirement Community and the Metropolitan Kiwanis; Bette appreciated the support and kindness. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
