ANNE MARY STEBBE
1924 - 2012
Suddenly on Friday, September 28, 2012, God called Anne, widow of Lawrence Stebbe, to join the love of her life in their eternal home. Anne was born in Beausejour, MB on February 14, 1924, to Angeline (Sikierski) and Peter Lewko. Left to cherish Anne's memory are her children and grandchildren: Colleen Stebbe, Darrin Fenske (Kyla), Ashley Ludwick (Mark); Wayne Stebbe, Llana Henderson (Shane), Jon Stebbe; Jan Ash-Gross (Arthur), Kate Gross; Patti Stebbe, Emily Catsirelis, Scott Catsirelis; brother Henry Lewko (Gail); sisters-in-law Eleanor Lewko and Sherry Lewko; Aunt' Phyl (to her children) and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Casmir, Edward, George and Archie; sister Rose, and a baby sister who died shortly after birth. Mom and Dad were childhood acquaintances, but when Dad returned to Beausejour in 1945 after the war, their romance blossomed; they married on June 28, 1947. They operated Larry's Chip Stand and later Larry's Shoe Store. Mom worked alongside Dad as his business partner, raised a family, managed the home front and developed extraordinary culinary talents while becoming a hostess extraordinaire. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a driving force behind the publication of the Lutheran Ladies Aid Cookbook. She loved sports, and played tennis while working in Thunder Bay during the war years. Mom was active in the Beausejour Curling Club, the Bowling League and the Victoria Cedar Hill Golf Course when retirement allowed her to take up golf. An avid bridge player, she often hosted four tables at once supplying her famous appetizers and other treats. Her trophy collection spawned many enjoyable stories. Mom and Dad retired in their late 50s to Victoria, BC enjoying 25 years with old and new friends until returning to Winnipeg in 2007. Their travels took them to various parts of Canada, the US, Europe, Hong Kong and many winters in Hawaii. Mom was hospitality personified; she was never flustered by the arrival of unplanned guests and always managed to feed extra mouths. She was a kind and generous soul and loved people, especially her family. As she believed she was loved by God, she loved us unconditionally and so by her example taught us how to love. Mom and Nana, we have loved you deeply and you will be forever in our hearts. A Celebration of Mom's Life will be held on Friday, October 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 400 Rouge Road, Winnipeg. Interment will follow in the Beausejour Town Cemetery. All are welcome. Rev. Carol Janke officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Lutheran World Relief, #302-393 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 3H6; Canadian Diabetes Association, #200-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6 or MS Society, #100-1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg, MB R3T 1L8.
