Richard Wojcik Funeral Director - Joan Downie

JOAN ROWENA HUGHES
 (aka JOAN DOWNIE)

On Saturday, January 19, 2013; Joan passed away peacefully at St. Boniface General Hospital.
Left to cherish Joan’s memory are her treasured daughter, Leslie; son-in-law, Craig; grandson, Scott; and two great grandchildren, Brooklynne and Braden Moore and Thelma Downie. She was predeceased by her parents Charlotte and Cuthbert Hughes.
Joan was born in Stonewall, Manitoba. She devoted her life to public service, spending several years with the then Unemployment Commission. Later, she spent 37 years with the City Public Library System. Joan was a proud member of the Ex-Wrens Association, Chippewa Division for many years until it disbanded. She loved and enjoyed life, accepting whatever came her way with steadfast courage and hope. She loved her friends, pets, gardens, books and sustained her faith in the goodness of human kind.
Joan wishes to acknowledge her appreciation of Shannon O'Brien, her "second daughter", whose help and care enabled her to enjoy her home and independence until her passing. She was honoured by many devoted friends and would wish to include sincere thanks for their help and devotion to Yvonne and Louis Desrosiers, Adele Yakimischak, Patricia Stockbrocks, Gordon and Marlene McNabb and Claire Dudridge. Joan was most honoured to be granted honorary membership in the extended Kielbeck (Adele) family among whose ranks she found much gratification. She also wishes to thank Dr. Gwozdecki of Lakewood Clinic for his many years of excellent and compassionate care.  Special thank yous to the ICU and the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface General Hospital.
In compliance with Joan’s wishes there will be no Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the SPCA or a charity of one's choice.
