THOMAS
JAMES MOFFATT
Dad was born in Winnipeg on August 13, 1918
and passed away peacefully on January 1, 2014.
He was 95 and capable of telling good stories until the end.
Surviving Jim is Beryl, his wife of 63 years
and his two sons Tom (Doris) and Chris (Disa). He met Beryl at Greenwood United
Church in Winnipeg and they were married in 1950 in her hometown of Boissevain,
Manitoba. Tom was born in 1951, Chris in 1955.
Dad was proud and supportive of his family, a great husband and father.
With the exception of his wartime service,
Jim lived a long happy life in Winnipeg. As a boy, he lived on Goulding Street
with his parents Emerson and Cecilia and his sisters Mary and Pat. Only Mary survives and lives in Toronto close
to her family. While living on Goulding
Street he started his first job, delivering papers for the Winnipeg Free
Press.
Dad started in business working with his
father selling real estate and insurance before and after the war. He took over
the business when Emerson died in 1951. He went on to form a successful
partnership with Don McKinnon operating as McKinnon and Moffatt on Corydon
Avenue. He retired working for Guy
Couglin and thought of Guy as a good friend.
An RCAF veteran, Dad served in Canada,
England and Egypt. This gave him the opportunity to explore Newfoundland,
Yorkshire and Palestine and even visit the Pyramids at Giza. In later years, he
enjoyed travelling to a few of his wartime locations, Sutton-on-the-Forest in
Yorkshire and Pier 21 in Halifax.
Golf was a passion. He was a member of the
Charleswood Golf Club until it closed and then he moved on to the Assiniboine
Golf Club. Dad had a unique golf swing; it got results, but it will never be
duplicated.
History was another passion; he was a
storehouse of information with an amazing memory. He could name neighbours and
customers going back 80 years. When he
was given the Canadian Encyclopedia, he read it cover to cover.
People however were Dad’s greatest passion.
He shared his love and affection with Beryl, Tom (Doris), Chris (Disa), sister
Mary; nephews Jim (Milena), Tom (Stella) and Steve (Debbie), grandchildren
Jason and Lisa and many great nieces and nephews. Dad made many long-lasting
friends throughout his life. Everyone
who met Jim liked him.
A simple Memorial Service will be held on
Monday, January 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Sturgeon Creek 2, 707 Setter Street.
The family would like to extend thanks to Dr.
Joshua and the staff at the Grace Hospital for the compassionate care that Dad
received over the last three years. Their efforts are sincerely appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 – 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
