Wojcik's Funeral Chapel - Mary Allen Funeral Arrangements

JOYCE ALLEN
(nee STEVENS)
July, 1921 - December, 2013

Following a massive stroke Joyce passed away on Friday, December 13, 2013 at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 92 years.
Joyce was the last of the Stevens-Allen clan.  She was predeceased by an infant brother Merven; her Mother and Father, Edna and Eric Stevens; three siblings Ava, Enid and Orla and her beloved husband George Grandville Allen on July 23, 2000.
Joyce was born in Kelliher, SK and took her education there.  At the age of 19 she went into training at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon to become a nurse.  In 1944 upon graduation she and three classmates went to North Battleford for a year, then her friend Hazel and she went to St. Catherines for an additional year.  On Joyce’s return she specialized in Saskatoon.  She got a call to go to Plunkett, SK to look after a special lady with a stroke. She stayed three weeks until she passed away.
Lanigan, SK had just built a hospital and were short staffed.  Joyce promised to go for a month and stayed 16 years.  She took on the Matron’s duties when her friend Kay was married.  It was there she met Dr. George Allen and eight years later they were married in 1962.  She became his soul mate with medicine in common. In 1967 George decided to improve his medicine by taking radiology, he already had post graduate in surgery and obstetrics so they moved to Winnipeg for a four year term which ended with them staying permanently.
Joyce joined the Charleswood Curling Club ladies’ section and several years later became an honorary life member.  In the summer she joined the John Blumberg golf club and with 4 other girls worked to have the club join the C.L.G.A.  Joyce was the only one left of the five and was made honorary life member of the ladies’ section.  At the age of 85, arthritis caught up to her and she had to quit golf and curling but always remained interested in both sports. Not satisfied with sitting around Joyce joined a two table bridge club and enjoyed girl talk and bridge.
In compliance with Joyce’s wishes there will not be a Funeral Service. She will be buried beside her husband George and her sister Ava in the Stevens’ family plot in the Kelliher Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made in Joyce’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
