EDWARD “ED” WILLIAM GREER
After
a lengthy illness Edward Wm. J. Greer passed away peacefully with members of
his loving family at his side on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Victoria
General Hospital in Winnipeg Manitoba.
Left
to cherish Ed’s memory are his wife Inga Thorsteinson; mother Rose Greer (Parry
Sound, ON); sisters Julia Miller and her husband James (Parry Sound, ON) and
Carolyn Fuller and her husband Roland (Lively, ON); nieces Crystal Miller and
Katherine Bastedo; nephews Sandy, Jason and Burton Fuller. He was predeceased
by his father Capt. Reginald Greer.
Ed
was born in Midland, ON and grew up in Parry Sound, ON. Following in his
father’s and uncle’s tradition, he was drawn to the water and joined The
Canadian Coast Guard as soon as he was old enough. Ed had a thirty eight year career on the
Great Lakes, many of which were as Captain of a Search and Rescue unit. Over the years he fought many storms and saved
many lives. In Thunder Bay On he met his
wife and kindred spirit Inga Thorsteinson.
They married in 1992 and were together until his departure.
Enjoying
the outdoors; Ed was an avid camper. He
loved paddling in his home made cedar strip prospector canoe and his
kayak. Many happy camping trips were
enjoyed in the years that he and Inga lived and worked in Thunder Bay. After
his retirement in 2003, Ed and Inga moved to Winnipeg. He loved his Charleswood home with its
natural quiet charm. He especially came to love the Whiteshell area of the
province for retreats into nature. Ed would travel to Parry Sound to visit his
family and boyhood home as often as he could.
After
his retirement Ed nurtured his love and compassion for animals. He volunteered at D’Arcy’s A.R.C. for as long
as his health allowed him, walking dogs at the shelter. He dearly loved his two dogs Emo and Benny
and his two cats Netley and C.C. Ed was
an active member of several local dart leagues and played darts with his
friends every winter. He especially
enjoyed tournaments and won many prizes over the years.
Family,
friends and neighbours are invited to an informal Celebration of Ed’s Life
gathering at his home at 794 Pepperloaf Crescent on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at
1:00 p.m.
A
special thank you to Dr. R. Wong, Dr. Qureshi and the staff at St. Boniface
CancerCare.
If
so desired and as an expression of your sympathy, donations may be made in Ed’s
memory to your favourite animal shelter, wildlife rehabilitation center or
wilderness preservation fund.
