CATHERINE
ELIZABETH SHEARER
1930
- 2013
In God’s grace and mercy, Catherine passed
from this life on Friday, January 4, 2013 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Catherine leaves grateful hearts and happy
memories with her children, Mary Lamont Shaver (Terry), Cathie Lamont Makaroff
(Doug), Edward Lamont (Paula); grandchildren, Dustin Shaver, Christine, Michael
and Jonathan Makaroff; great-grandchildren London and Mason Shaver, and their
mother Melanie Shaver. She is also remembered with love by her sisters Lee
Powell and Roberta McCannell; many nieces; nephews and in-laws. She was
predeceased by her brother Donald Shearer; sister Anne Shearer Wright and her
husband Charlie Lamont.
Catherine was a devoted mother,
grandmother, aunt, sister, daughter and friend. She was a friend and
champion of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, a dedicated teacher, and
committed environmentalist. This amazing woman was an adventurer throughout her
life: she loved exploring places and cultures, and travelled the world from a
young age until it was simply no longer possible for her. Catherine started her
own business in her mid-fifties, and went on to produce a curriculum and books
for speech-reading and the hard of hearing. She was passionate about many
things, and loved children, her church, books, singing, being in nature,
gardening, and cottage time at Brereton Lake. She swam and walked daily,
usually with one in a long succession of decrepit – but much-loved –
dogs. Catherine had a wicked sense of humour, and often laughed until she
cried, much to her family’s delight. She was always looking out for the
underdog or those in need of a hand up and was open-hearted and hospitable to
all. Catherine managed the depression-era trick of being remarkably frugal and
extremely generous at the same time.
Deepest gratitude to all those who loved
Catherine and visited, wrote and supported her to the end. Special thanks to
the amazing staff at Misericordia Health Centre and Misericordia Place.
A celebration of Catherine’s journey on
this earth will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. in
Westminster Church, 745 Westminster Avenue. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made
to the wonderful work that Westminster Church does in the community; donations
