JOAN ROWENA HUGHES
(aka JOAN DOWNIE)
On
Saturday, January 19, 2013; Joan passed away peacefully at St. Boniface General
Hospital.
Left to
cherish Joan’s memory are her treasured daughter, Leslie; son-in-law, Craig;
grandson, Scott; and two great grandchildren, Brooklynne and Braden Moore and
Thelma Downie. She was predeceased by her parents Charlotte and Cuthbert
Hughes.
Joan was
born in Stonewall, Manitoba. She devoted her life to public service, spending
several years with the then Unemployment Commission. Later, she spent 37 years
with the City Public Library System. Joan was a proud member of the Ex-Wrens
Association, Chippewa Division for many years until it disbanded. She loved and
enjoyed life, accepting whatever came her way with steadfast courage and hope. She
loved her friends, pets, gardens, books and sustained her faith in the goodness
of human kind.
Joan
wishes to acknowledge her appreciation of Shannon O'Brien, her "second
daughter", whose help and care enabled her to enjoy her home and
independence until her passing. She was honoured by many devoted friends and
would wish to include sincere thanks for their help and devotion to Yvonne and
Louis Desrosiers, Adele Yakimischak, Patricia Stockbrocks, Gordon and Marlene
McNabb and Claire Dudridge. Joan was most honoured to be granted honorary
membership in the extended Kielbeck (Adele) family among whose ranks she found
much gratification. She also wishes to thank Dr. Gwozdecki of Lakewood Clinic
for his many years of excellent and compassionate care. Special thank yous to the ICU and the
Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface General Hospital.
In
compliance with Joan’s wishes there will be no Funeral Service.
In lieu
of flowers, contributions may be made to the SPCA or a charity of one's
choice.
