MILDRED GALATIUK
(nee JACKSON)
On Monday, January 14, 2013 Mildred passed
away at Grace Hospital, at the age of 84 years.
Left to cherish Mildred’s memory are her
children Calvin, Graham, Vivian and Lois; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; siblings Stanley
(Carol), Betty (Bruce) and Winston (Marlies). She was predeceased by her
husband Paul in 2011; parents James and Bessie; sister Patricia (Albert); as
well as by her beloved son, Warren.
Mildred was the first of five children born
to James and Bessie Jackson. She was born on January 21, 1928 at home on the
Jackson farm located SE of Inglis, Manitoba. She attended Lockerby School,
attaining her Grade 9, and then had the good fortune of living part-time in
Russell with relatives, enabling her to attend the Russell Collegiate and
complete her Grade 12. Following graduation Mildred taught for one year at Deer
Range School, a one-room country school near Neepawa; and following that, took
a year of nurse’s training at the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing.
In 1949, she married Paul Galatiuk, taking up residence on their farm located
NW of Inglis. Together they raised their family of five children on this farm.
In 1964, Mildred moved to her mother’s home in Winnipeg, together with the three
youngest children, to attend Manitoba Teachers’ College in Tuxedo. Returning
home with her teaching certificate, she commenced teaching a Grade 4 class the
following Fall in Roblin. She then taught Grade 5; followed by Grade 6 (Lois
fondly remembers learning her Grade 6 math from her Mom). In later years she
would also teach one year of Kindergarten. Mildred will probably be best
remembered for her many years of teaching Kindergarten to Grade 6 music (in
which she incorporated the latest teaching methods including “the Orff
approach”), her many award winning choirs, and musicals. Her favorite musical
was “It’s Cool in the Furnace”, which was new at the time and still popular
today. Mildred also continued on with her own education spending a number of summers
in Winnipeg earning her Bachelor of Arts degree, two courses at a time, from
the U of M. She received her diploma in 1974. She was director of the Roblin
Community choir from its inception in 1962 until it disbanded in the early
Seventies. She was an avid sewer, making clothes for herself and the children,
numerous teddy bears and animals for the grandchildren, and, in her retirement
years, many quilts. Mildred quilted with the United Church Ladies group; and
volunteered with the ladies group at the Crocus Care Home making baby blankets,
where funds raised were used to purchase treats for the residents. She also
enjoyed painting; doing works in charcoal, oil, pastels and water-colours.
Mildred and Paul retired to Roblin, Manitoba in 1989. They travelled
extensively in Canada, the US, Europe and Australia. In May 2008 they moved to
Winnipeg to be closer to their daughter Vivian, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
On Friday, January 18, 2013 Mildred’s Funeral
Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson
Drive. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue.
