MICHAEL PAUL SCHIOLER
(MIKE)
B.Sc. (Civil
Engineering)
November 21, 1930 -
July 3, 2014
On the evening of July 3rd, I lost my dearly
beloved husband after a very long, courageous battle with COPD, Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Emphysema & Chronic Bronchitis). Mike's
illness presented him with many challenges that reinforced in him and all of
his immediate family members, the importance of love, caring and looking out
for one another. Through good times and bad, through happy times and sad,
through thick and thin, we were a team. Mike's greatest passion was his family
and it was for all 27 of us that he lived and breathed.
Mike was born on November 21, 1930 to parents
Kai Birch Schioler and Olina Schioler (nee Magnusson). He grew up on Deer Lodge
Place in St. James, attended Linwood School, St. James Collegiate, followed by
United College (now the University of Winnipeg).
Mike and I (Phyllis, nee Henderson) met each
other in January, 1950 at a bus stop. It was 5 and 1/2 years later upon his
graduation in Civil Engineering, from the University of Manitoba that we were
married. We then moved to Montreal where Mike began his 43 year career with the
Dominion Bridge Company. Over the next eight years we produced five children
while living in Montreal, Regina and Winnipeg.
Mike proved himself early on as Sales
Manager- Regina Branch, followed by Sales Manager- Winnipeg Branch and
advancing to General Manager - Winnipeg Branch. Mike retired in 1992 as
Vice-President, Structural Sales Western Canada Division - Winnipeg to
Vancouver. He was personable and well respected in the field of Engineering and
Construction. Through the years, Mike had been Director and Provincial
Vice-President of the Canadian Construction Association, Director of the Canadian
Institute of Steel Construction, President of The Winnipeg Construction
Association, and President of the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Professional
Engineer's Association. He also received diplomas from the Banff School of
Advanced Management and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in
Hanover, New Hampshire.
Throughout the years, Mike enjoyed his
memberships with the former Carleton Club, Manitoba Club and the St. Charles
Country Club. Most of all he was a proud member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity
and was a life-long member of the St. James Anglican Church. Upon retirement,
Mike served on the Board of Directors of the Grace Hospital, under the auspices
of the Salvation Army, for six years.
Mike's favorite place for the family to
gather each summer was at our cottage in Victoria Beach. He loved playing
tennis at the old VB tennis courts with his doubles partner Fran Pollard and at
the Deer Lodge tennis courts in Winnipeg. Mike loved the tennis talks with his
son-in law Robert. In Mike's earlier years he played basketball for the
University of Manitoba Bisons, played Lacrosse for Deer Lodge and enjoyed
curling at the Deer Lodge, Fort Rouge, and Granite Curling Clubs. In recent
years, he looked forward to playing bridge with his cronies at the Bruce Park
Place Condo. He always loved a good party with all his family and numerous
friends.
Mike loved his drives with me, through
Assiniboine Park while listening to Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson (On The Road
Again), Johnny Cash and ABBA. During our 64 years together, many happy times
were spent and everlasting memories made. He loved to make up nicknames and my
two names were "Lucy" and "Philly Baby".
Mike was predeceased by his parents, Kai and
Olina Schioler, brother Tommy (killed in action World War II), sisters, Elsa
Woods, Kathleen Skynner, nephew Henry John Skynner, his cousin Ron Leggett of
Kipling, Saskatchewan, and by his brothers-in-law Dr. Peter Sudermann and David
Henderson.
Mike is survived by his wife Phyllis, son Tom
(Margaret) and children Julian, Raquel, Toban, Chelsa and Katrina; son David
(Sharon) and children Jordan, Connor and Dane; son Kai (Ursula) and children
Liam, Keiran and Bryn; daughter Kim (Dave Solleveld) and children Shannon and
Danielle; daughter Linda (Robert Kennedy) and children Sarah and Melissa.
Mike is also survived by his sisters-in law,
Barbara Sudermann, Naomi (Bill Mann) of
Vancouver, Noreen Henderson, special cousin John Schioler of Ottawa,
several other cousins on the Schioler and Magnusson family lines and his many
nieces and nephews on both sides of his extended families as well as his
numerous dear friends.
A very special thank you is extended to Dr.
Ray Singer for taking such great care of Mike throughout the last 35 years. Dr.
Singer was thorough and easy going with him. Many thanks also to Dr. Homik; the
Grace Hospital Emergency, Dr. Borrett, Dr. Macek and the Nursing Staff on the
5th Floor. Thanks also to the wonderful Firefighters and Paramedics. Mike was a
very appreciative patient and enjoyed all of the staff who helped make his
hospital stay comfortable and bearable.
Mike was a true Winnipegger and Canadian who
was also very proud of his Danish and Icelandic heritage. Mike's family was his
life and he instilled his integrity, love and dedication in his children. He
was modest and never sought praise. Mike leaves a legacy of "LOVE"
that will live on in ALL of us! He was truly a family man, a wonderful husband,
Dad, and FAR FAR. You will live on
forever in our hearts.
"Goda
Nott Min Elskin”

Reverend Murray Still of St James
