SOPHIE VIRGINIA
PIHULAK
(nee GRZECH)
Peacefully, on Saturday, July 19, 2014
after a brief hospital stay, Sophie died at the age of 88 years.
Sophie will be dearly missed by sons
Don (Liz) of Armstrong, BC; Bruce (Louise) of Lac du Bonnet, MB and Jim of
Calgary, AB; sister Anne Bench of Winnipeg; sister-in-law Lil Pihulak of Fort
Frances, ON, as well as many nieces; nephews; and Godchildren. She was
predeceased by her husband Steve (1994); and siblings Helen, Frank, Walter,
Joe, Carl and Mary.
On November 10, 1925 Sophie was born
in Fort Frances, ON. After leaving high school she obtained her hairdressing
certificate at Marvel School of Beauty in Winnipeg. She and Steve were married
on October 16, 1948 in Fort Frances and later moved to Manitoba. While raising
their three boys, they owned and operated the Hilltop Stand and Cabins in
Lockport in the late 1950's, before moving to Lac du Bonnet in 1964, and then
to Winnipeg in 1988.
Sophie was a warm and caring person,
who never spoke unkindly of anyone. She was always upbeat and seldom
complained. Her cheerfulness and optimism made her a pleasure to be around.
Sophie had a sense of humour and always enjoyed a good joke. She lived a full,
healthy life and enjoyed making delicious meals for her family and any visitor
who came to the house. She would often be found in the kitchen, humming a tune
while preparing a meal. No visitor left her house without getting fed a full
meal or, at the very least, a snack.
For the past eight years Sophie was a
resident of Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence. She loved it there and
constantly stated that living at Sturgeon Creek was like being on a holiday!
She was always appreciative of any assistance from the staff and Homecare
workers, telling them that “you are an angel”. Sophie always said a prayer each
night before bedtime.
Now God
has a new Angel in Heaven
