WOJCIK'S FUNERAL HOME - REGINALD HARMAN FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

REGINALD LEWIS HARMAN
August 28, 1922 – May 8, 2014

Peacefully, on Thursday May 8, 2014, our much-loved husband, father, and grandfather, Reg "Spike" Harman passed away in Winnipeg, where he was born and lived to the grand old age of 91. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Isabel (nee Stewart), and by his four children: Christopher (Pat), Michael (Susanne), Sharon and Lisa.  Grandchildren are Robbie (Emma), Caitlin (Danny), Jennie, Rachel, Charlotte, Jason (Ji-Young) and Shannon; as well as great-grandsons Ryan, Owen and Iain. His life was made rich by many nieces and nephews.
Reg met the love of his life, Isabel, when she moved into Winnipeg from the Stewart farm near Gladstone to study Nursing. They were wed on June 12, 1948, and began a life together that they enjoyed for almost 66 years.
Reg and his younger brother Gary (d. July 2012) grew up on Ethelbert under the careful tutelage of their mother, Carrie, and attended Laura Secord and Gordon Bell High School. He went on to the University of Manitoba, graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 1945, having won the Gold Medal in Pharmacy in his second, third and fourth years. He made lifelong friends in these years.
Dad was well known in Winnipeg as the pharmacist and owner of Harman's Drug Store at Portage & Sherbrook.  Reg took over “the Store” from his father, Reg Sr., and made it his own.  Harman's was famous for its luncheonette, often written up in "Where to Eat in Canada," thanks to the talented staff and Spike's triple-decker sandwiches. He distinguished himself as a kind and fair man, much loved by his staff.  Most of his waking hours were spent “working” until he retired in 1982.
Over the years Reg participated in Kinsmen and served as an Elder of Westminster United Church. He curled with his Dad, played tennis with his friends, enjoyed carpentry, and was a Blue Jays fan. Reg had an extensive knowledge of music, being partial to the Big Band genre and to Frank Sinatra in particular. He loved nature and being “at the camp” at Granite Lake with Isabel. His ever-present interest in politics, science, world issues and the daily doings of his family, as well as his wacky sense of humour, will be dearly missed by all of us.
Thanks to the nursing staff on 3 South at Grace Hospital. Also to Dr. Belynda Salter-Oliver for her great kindness.
In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make a donation to Doctors Without Borders or to the Nature Conservancy.  A memorial service will be held in late July.

To My Family

I go from you gently for it is my time,
To take the next step in this journey of mine;
Don't grieve for me long – I've not left you alone,
For I will be with you
In the love that we've known,
That love is forever and some day when it's time
You'll join me again on this journey of mine.
