(nee McEWAN)
Peacefully with her family by her side, on Saturday, May 10, 2014, Verna
Winslade (nee McEwan) passed away at the Lion’s Personal Care Centre at the age
of 82 years.
Remaining to forever cherish Verna’s memory are her children, Valerie
(Heinz) Warkentin of Winnipeg, Brenda of Ottawa, Bob (Amber) of Lorette;
grandsons, Brad (Allison), A.J. (Jessica), and Kyle (Brittany Reid);
great-grandchildren Vivian, Taylor, Aidan and Chevara; sister Thelma Shaw; as
well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Barry
in April 2007; parents Joseph and Lydia McEwan; brother Angus; sisters-in-law
Beth Lunde and Pat Puls; and brothers-in law Ed Lunde, Ken Puls and Bernie
Shaw.
Mom was born, raised and educated in Winnipeg. Mom and Dad met for a
second time in high school at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. She was on the
basketball and track and field teams, setting some city records for the high
jump – her specialty. After
marrying Barry in 1953, she made a career of being a devoted wife and
mother. Before the children were born,
she worked at Winnipeg Electric, and when she became a mother, she made it her
priority to raise their children to be independent, but was always ready to
help us whenever and with whatever we needed.
Mom was Dad’s best friend, working side by side with him on many
projects from the time they met until Dad’s passing. A consummate organizer,
she was an avid repurposer/recycler long before recycling was popular. She enjoyed doing a wide variety of
handicrafts, including crocheting, knitting, sewing and many forms of
needlework. Mom loved dolls, especially
making outfits for them. Mom also enjoyed many sports throughout her life. She
was a true “Bomber Believer”, having enjoyed 33 years as a season ticket
holder. Even in the most trying of seasons she always said they were going to
win. Mom was happy to see the Jets come back to the city, and was an armchair
cheerleader for any team that represent her city or province.
As a 30 year member of the Telephone Pioneers (now MTS
Volunteers), Mom enjoyed spending Tuesdays with fellow volunteers working on
various charitable projects. The Hug-a-Bear program was particularly close to
her heart. Throughout the program’s lifespan, they provided 19,300 hand-made
teddy bears to various police, fire
and ambulance services in Winnipeg and around Manitoba to aid in comforting traumatized and injured
children.
On Friday, May 16, 2014 Verna’s Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m.
in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street @
Manitoba Avenue.
Special thanks to Auntie Thelma for bringing Mom meals and treats and to
her “real nurse” Debi for the time spent with Auntie Verna, especially the last
year for the support she gave Mom and us. Our family would also like to thank
the staff at the 3rd floor B Side Lion’s Personal Care Centre for
the care and compassion they provided Mom and support to us over the past seven
months. Thanks also to Dr. R. Albak for many years of care and kindness as
Mom’s physician.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mom’s memory to the
