Funeral Director Richard Wojcik - Steve Patrick Funeral Arrangements

STEVE PATRICK

It is with love and great sadness that we announce the passing of Steve: husband, father, grandfather and friend, on Saturday, January 11, 2014.
Left to cherish Steve’s memory are his wife June, of 58 years of marriage; children Kim (Shinsuke), Carolyn (Ken), Sandra, Stephen (Carrie), James (Deborah), Lisa (Danny), Tara; grandchildren, Brennan, Quinn, Madison, Nolan and Amelie; brother, Walter; and sisters, Anne and Tara. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Alex and Catherine; and his brother, John.
Steve was born in Glenella, Manitoba in 1931 and spent his early years watching his parents homestead the family farm, where he learned the value of hard work and overcoming challenges. After moving to Winnipeg, Steve enjoyed a successful 13-year career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He played on four Grey Cup Championship teams and was later inducted into both the Blue Bomber and Manitoba Sports Halls of Fame.
In 1956, Steve established Patrick Realty and Insurance, and was active in the business for over 50 years. He was also a Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly from 1962 to 1977, representing St. James Assiniboia. It was during this time he earned the distinction of being Manitoba’s “champion of all resolution makers.” Later, he served as a Commissioner on the CRTC for 10 years.
Steve gave of his time generously. He was a community minded volunteer who strongly believed in public service. He served as chairman of the St. James Cancer Society, Chairman of the Board of the Canadian Paraplegic Association for 8 years, and was a founding Member of the Winnipeg Big Brothers Association. As well, he served on the Misercordia Hospital Foundation Board for 10 years and was a proud Charter Member of the Winnipeg-Assiniboine Rotary Club.
Subsequently, Steve was recognized for his community service, receiving the Order of the Buffalo Hunt and the Canadian Centennial and Silver Jubilee Medals, to name a few.
Steve instilled in his children a love of sport and the outdoors. In his healthier years, he enjoyed spending time with his family at Falcon Lake, fishing, skiing, golfing and working around the cottage. He never missed the opening of hunting season and a typical Christmas involved a family hockey game at Woodhaven followed by a cross-country ski at Little Mountain Park. Until his final days he loved watching hockey and football on TV. However, sports were not his only passion. Steve was an avid reader with a great interest in history and politics. He would regularly hold court on the latest political events and loved to share his knowledge with his children and friends.
Steve’s friends were a mainstay in his life. After his retirement, he continued to enjoy Monday lunch meetings at Rae and Jerry’s, outings with the Bomber Alumni at the Assiniboine, and of course, his weekly Tuesday trip to Perkins with his coffee pals. Everyone who knew Steve would agree that he was a man who successfully combined outstanding achievement, with the personal qualities of honour, warmth, good nature and fair play.
Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2400 Portage Avenue with Rev. Msgr. Maurice Comeault, P.H., presiding. A private family Interment will follow in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Steve’s home care workers: Jacques, Dave, Dexter and Donovan for their wonderful care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or the charity of your choice.
