Wojcik's Funeral Home - Mike Davidson's Funeral Arrangements

MIKE (ADMAN) DAVIDSON
It is with great sadness that we announce that Mike Davidson, beloved husband of Donna, passed away early Friday, February 15, 2013 at the age of 65.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years Donna, daughter Elizabeth (Mike) Ashe, grand-daughters Victoria and Charlotte, son Barrie (Shelly), grandsons Nathan, Zachary and Ben, son Derrick, brother Ian and Aunt Maxine.
Mike worked for the Winnipeg Free Press for 40 years as an advertising sales rep before his early retirement and leaves behind many friends. Mike was a true gentleman. He was a kind soul, quiet, unassuming and always willing to lend a hand. Selfless when it came to his family, he would always be there to help, without ever being asked. His wit and sense of humour always brought a smile to those around him. He loved being retired and constantly kept busy being the handy-man at home and restoring the cottage in Winnipeg Beach to fulfill the dream of living there permanently. Mike loved spending his summers out at his cottage with Donna, hosting family barbecues and having all the dogs underfoot. We will always have wonderful memories of your sense of humour, great advice and being the rock that we could all rely on. Thank you for being the good person that you were. We love and miss you.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a pet rescue shelter of your choice.
As per Mike's wishes, a private cremation will take place.

Wojcik's Funeral Chapel - Robert Cooke's Funeral Arrangements

ROBERT (BOB) LEIGHTON ELLIOT COOKE
(Med. Hons.), MD, FRCS Eng, FRCSC

On Friday, February 8, 2013 Robert Cooke died at the age of 98 years.
Bob was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Elizabeth Cooke (Grahame) and his 3 older siblings Enid, Beth (Whiteley) and Terry. He is survived by four children, Mary Ellen (Toronto), Robert (Toronto, Liesel Putrycz), Andrew (Winnipeg, Pamela Woodmass) and Sheila Cooke-Witt (Hamburg Germany, Karsten Witt); as well as 11 grandchildren.
Robert (Bob) was born in 1914 in Wolseley Saskatchewan during the opening months of the Great War. He had an idyllic childhood as the 4th child of a teacher and a country doctor with whom he did winter house calls in a horse-drawn sleigh, but his adolescence was seared by the poverty of the 1930’s drought and Great Depression in a small prairie town. Perhaps as a result, he had a lifelong interest in economics.
With combined sacrifice, his family sent him to the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained his BSc. and partial medical training and then on to the University of Manitoba to complete his MD with a Gold Medal in 1939. In 1941 he joined the RCNVR and served 4 years as a surgeon on loan to the Royal Navy in England and on board the hospital ship HMHS Oxfordshire in Sierra Leone and South Africa. He was discharged in 1945 as Surgeon Lieutenant Commander.
He completed further postgraduate surgical training in London (FRCS Eng.) in 1947 before returning to Winnipeg (FRCSC 1948) where he married Ruth in 1949. She had graduated from medical school the same year. After briefly practicing surgery, Robert together with Ruth and their 1st born, went on to New York in 1951 for his surgical oncology training at Memorial Sloan Kettering. Then with a second child they returned in 1954 to Winnipeg where 2 more children were born. Robert joined the Manitoba Clinic in 1955 where he practiced until his first retirement at age 66 in 1980. During his career he was on the surgical staff of Health Sciences Centre. He was Associate Professor in Surgery, University of Manitoba. He served terms as Postgraduate Surgery Training Director, as Examiner in Surgery for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and as President of the Winnipeg Medical Society.   Upon retirement from surgery, Bob continued with a second career, joining Manitoba Health, first as an Assessor and then as Chief Medical Consultant for a further 10 years.
He served on boards and committees of the Manitoba Medical Services (predecessor to Medicare), the Manitoba Medical Association, CancerCare Manitoba, Canadian Cancer Society, and as President of the University of Manitoba Alumni.
The highest praise a surgeon can receive is to be asked to look after the family members of the nurses and doctors with whom one works and by that measure he could be very proud of his career. The largest pile of gifts under the Christmas tree was invariably for Bob, often beautifully hand-crafted by thankful cancer survivors. He was also an admired surgical teacher and mentor and was awarded the Distinguished Medical Educator Award by the Manitoba Provincial Association of Interns and Residents.
On a storied vacation from London to the Swiss Alps in 1947 he learned to ski. Childhood summers in the Qu’Appelle Valley lakes taught him to sail. Those skills were handed down with passion to his children and grandchildren. The family cabin at West Hawk Lake was a focal point in his life, where he could relax by puttering, repairing all manner of gear with epoxy and surgical tape and by sailing the Y-Flyer with trapeze and spinnaker causing happy chaos. Despite the lack of a phone or road at the cabin, patients still arrived by boat for emergency stitches and dressings produced from his black bag which was always at hand.
Though a kind-hearted man, Bob rarely hesitated when asked, to offer the unvarnished truth.  This led to many famous Bob anecdotes recounted by his colleagues.   He had a robust sense of humour and he loved to socialize.  He and Ruth enjoyed entertaining and their many years with the Dance Club.
Bob was far ahead of his time as a pro-feminist, enthusiastically supporting Ruth in her return to her career as physician and professor in the 1960s. At home Ruth and Robert were sometimes indulgent parents but no mercy was given when it came to studying and marks. Dinner table conversation with the children would be a detailed critique of their home work, medicine, politics, finance or current affairs.  The children benefited from the scrutiny with one obtaining an MBA and 3 an MD.
In retirement, Bob curled and relished his current affairs discussion group.  He and Ruth travelled extensively and enjoyed their beloved grandchildren. In the last decade of his life Bob dealt with increasing macular blindness and deafness with grace and patience.  His children are deeply appreciative of the loyal and dear friends who continued to include Ruth and Bob in their social lives and who visited them until their very last days. The family would also like to thank the 4th floor staff at the Poseidon PCH for their kindness. Bob died three weeks after Ruth’s wake. Overall, his life was one of success and great happiness.  No public service will be held. Bob’s ashes will be placed together with Ruth’s at a fond family location.

Wojcik's Funeral Chapel - Nancy McRae's Funeral Arrangements

AGNES “NANCY” MUIR McRAE

After a lengthy illness, Nancy quietly slipped away at St. Joseph’s Residence on Wednesday, February 20, 2013.
Nancy leaves to mourn, her daughters Heather (Bill) Ashdown, Karen (Brian) Gamley; and two grandsons, Ryan and Sean. She was predeceased by her husband Jack.
Nancy was born in Winnipeg on March 6, 1927. She was a remarkable lady, living through the Depression and difficult times with stoicism, courage, and a unique sense of humour. Although being a mother, grandmother, wife and homemaker was a priority in her life, she had an unusual career as Matron of the Old Kildonan Police Force; later she worked for the Manitoba Lung Association. Our most memorable times with Mom include her babysitting days with Ryan and Sean, clearing bush at the cottage, and baking apple pies.
After a paralyzing stroke, Mom continued to be a quiet strength in our lives.  Renal failure and the necessity of dialysis restricted Mom’s lifestyle but her spirit and curiosity kept her vital to the end.
No words can express our appreciation to Mom’s caregivers at St. Joseph’s and Seven Oaks Dialysis.  She was always treated with respect, dignity and competence.  We also extend a special thank you to Dr. Terry Babick.
All flowers gratefully declined.  In honor of Mom’s love for animals, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3.

Richard Wojcik Funeral Director - Michael Harasym's Funeral Arrangements

MICHAEL JEROME HARASYM
1928 – 2013

On Saturday, February 16, 2013 Mike Harasym passed away peacefully in his sleep, at home with family at his side, after a lengthy battle with cancer, at the age of 84 years.
Mike was first diagnosed with colon cancer in April 2006 at which time his first operation to treat his ailment began. Mike was born on June 28, 1928, the fifth child of six to Jessie and Wasyl Harasym on the family homestead at Okno, MB (8 miles directly North of Arborg, MB).
Mike was predeceased by his father 1973, mother 1981, infant brother John 1920, brother Bill 1988, brother Theo 2002, sister Anne 2004 and his oldest son Theodore William (Theo) in 2001. Mike is survived by his loving wife Kae of 60 years, his sons Robert (Linda and granddaughter Rosalyn) Lorette, MB, and Kenneth, Winnipeg, daughter-in-law Lori, Beaconia, MB (grandson Mathew, Winnipeg) and his sister Mary of Arborg, MB.
The family moved to the town of Arborg in August 1928 in order that convenient schooling would be available for the children. Mike received his education at the Ardal Public School and on completion of his high school education began his first permanent job in 1947 with the Arborg Farmer's Co-op. During his schooling days Mike found various types of work in order to provide for himself and not be a burden on his parents.
Life was happy and good while growing up in Arborg and Mike learned many lessons of life, especially in the mid 1930's while seeing how some of the less fortunate families survived. Through life, Mike's learning of life in the 1930's stayed with him and he did not like to see good things going to waste.
Mike started to work with the British American Oil Company in 1949 at Arborg, and was transferred to Winnipeg in 1951. During a lay off period in the winter of 1950/1951 Mike worked at a logging camp in Aimsdale, ON, handling 8 foot logs from the bush to the C.P. Rail gondola cars.
Mike and Kathleen Eyolfson (Vidir/Arborg, daughter of Wilberg and Freda Eyolfson) were married at the Ardal Lutheran Church, Arborg, on Mike's 24th birthday, June 28, 1952.
Mike and Kae made their home in Winnipeg until 1956 when Mike was transferred to Flin Flon, MB, to open up a new branch for the British American Oil Co. Kae and Mike had two sons born in Flin Flon, Theodore in 1958 and Robert in 1961.
Mike was transferred to Brandon on December 15, 1963 where he managed the B.A. Oil Co Terminal which later amalgamated with Gulf Oil and Anglo Canadian Oil. While in Brandon Kae and Mike's third son Kenneth was born in 1966.
Again on January 1, 1972 the Brandon Gulf Oil facilities were amalgamated with Winnipeg and Mike was transferred to Winnipeg in the same capacity. Mike retired on April 30, 1986 in Winnipeg.
Through the years, especially while the children were growing, Mike, Kae and the family enjoyed traveling with a house trailer in tow, to various locations across Canada and the United States. A summer cottage was maintained in Minneapolis from 1969 until it was sold in 2005.
During the past few years, Mike treasured time spent with family and enjoyed days relaxing in his back yard or in his beautiful home of 42 years, reminiscing over all the wonderful years of his life.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013, 10:00 am at Joy Lutheran Church, 50 Barnes Street, Winnipeg with Pastor Ed Mitchler officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave, Winnipeg.
Special thanks to all the doctors, nurses and medical staff who helped add years to Mike's life, and offered kindness and compassion along the way.

Wojcik's Funeral Chapel - William McMenemy Funeral Arrangements

WILLIAM C. (BILL) McMENEMY
 July 7, 1927- July 30, 2012
VE4 WCM/VE3 CBR
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bill McMenemy in the early morning hours of Monday, July 30 at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home with his loving wife Helen at his side. Bill is survived by Helen (nee LaHay), his beloved wife of 61 years. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his three daughters and their families: Diane and Michael Papst, their children Victoria, Henry and Joseph; Katie and David Woelfle, their daughters Lindsey and Rebecca; and Colleen and Glen McGee, their sons Ken (fiancĂ© Janet), Sean (wife Stacy and her children Emma and Henry). Bill is also survived by his sister Mary Ashbee. As a young man, Bill was an active volunteer with the St. John Ambulance Brigade. It was during those activities that he met Helen. He and Helen received certificates of commendation for their efforts during the S. S. Noronic disaster in Toronto Harbour in 1949. Bill and Helen were married in Toronto in 1951 and lived in various parts of southern Ontario following advances in Bill's professional career. After 33 years in the Bramalea/Brampton area, in 1998 Bill and Helen relocated to Winnipeg to be nearer to family. Bill started his working life as an industrial chemist and retired as Industrial Relations Manager for Chrysler Canada. He especially enjoyed the high tension brinkmanship of contract negotiations. Since 1961, Bill has been an amateur radio operator, most recently as a member of the Winnipeg Senior Citizens Radio Club. He received a letter of appreciation for his service as VE3 CBR during the Mississauga Emergency of 1979. Bill enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, bowling and traveling with his wife Helen. He was a patient and hopeful fisherman and an avid reader. On behalf of the family, we would like to thank the staff of St. Norbert Personal Care Home for their kindness and compassion while Bill was in their care. In keeping with Bill's wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Manitoba Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science. Internment will be at a later date. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 4 at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, Winnipeg. A reception will follow in the church hall. If friends wish, donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Siloam Mission (300 Princess Street, Winnipeg MB R3B 1M3 or www.siloam.ca) or to a charity of your choice.

Wojcik's Funeral Home - Joan Donnelly Funeral Arrangements

JOAN DONNELLY (nee CARRIERE)
Peacefully but suddenly, with her family and special friends by her side, Mom passed away Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 76 years. She fought a short but courageous battle with bone cancer. We knew Brian couldn't let her suffer so he took her quickly. Mom is survived by her three children and six grandchildren, Gary and Heather Fustey, (Sara, Amy and step-grandson Dennis), Susan and Mike Davey (Matthew Nemetchek and Vanessa, Shaun Nemetchek and Sue, stepgrandchildren Kennedy, Curtis and Callan), Michael and Brigette Fustey (Courtney and Kolton). She was predeceased by her husband, Brian Donnelly and mother, Evelyne Carriere. Mom's last week with us was incredible. She was visited by some of her favourite friends, Dino, Vince and Gus and her best friend of 60 years Muriel and Dick Petersen from Minneapolis. She was happy with her hair perfectly done and her lipstick on; she was ready to see her husband again. Mom lived her life around her family, her children and grandchildren were her world. We thank you Mom for 76 wonderful years and many more precious memories. There will be no formal Funeral Service. A private family Interment will take place. We would like to say a special thank you to Adriana Goodmanson for all her caring visits and understanding of mom during her hospital stay. The family would also like to thank the staff at RR6 Rehab hospital for their care, patience and support in the short time Mom was there. If desired, donations in Joan's name may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
