RICHARD WOJCIK WINNIPEG FUNERAL DIRECTOR - EUNICE MILDRED ROSS FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Eunice Mildred Ross
 (nee BOURKE)

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Eunice Ross on Friday, January 23, 2015 in the Charleswood Care Centre, in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 91 years.
Born on September 11, 1923 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Eunice is survived by her sister Doreen; daughters Darlene Ross-Cook (David Cook) of Calgary, Alberta, Kim Ross (Dennis Engel) of Winnipeg; and grandsons Marcus Engel of Edmonton, Alberta, and Jordan Engel of Winnipeg. Eunice was predeceased by her parents, John P. and Lillian (Pearson) Bourke of Winnipeg; as well as brother John of Headingly, Manitoba.  She was also predeceased by her husband, John Evan Ross on June 18, 1968.
Eunice married returning soldier John Ross, after the Second World War.  They made their home in the Winnipeg community of Woodhaven, in a home skillfully built by John.  After his early passing, she rose to the challenge of raising her young daughters on her own. Eunice’s strong friendships with her neighbors in Woodhaven provided her with great comfort during the years of raising her daughters. Eunice’s children fondly remember their summers at the family cottage at Lac du Bonnet, also built by John.  The happiness and success of her children and grandchildren gave Eunice her greatest joy.  In her later years, she enjoyed the community of friends in the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts in St. James.  After a recent illness, she moved to the Charleswood Care Centre.
A private family funeral service will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to extend thanks to the kind care and friendship of the staff of the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts and also to the staff of the Charleswood Care Centre.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Manitoba branch of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Suite 200 Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6.

WOJCIK'S FUNERAL CHAPEL - BEATRICE (JOYCE) HUME FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

BEATRICE JOYCE HUME
 (nee GRIFFEN)

On Wednesday, January 21, our dear mother, Beatrice Joyce Hume finally came to the end of her long road, passing quietly and peacefully, surrounded by family, after an eight day stay at St. Boniface Hospital.
In life, Joyce was a graceful, sophisticated, and elegant woman who comported herself with rigorous dignity, finding immeasurable joy in the company of her family and a fierce singular pride in their achievements. She was an educator, both professionally for a time, and as a matter of course throughout her life, sharing insights, observations and understanding with generous enthusiasm. Joyce loved language, music, art and drama, and carefully invested her children with an appreciation for all of these.
At the same time, Joyce was possessed of a remarkable core of iron strength, having known, endured and thrived in the hardships of her Canadian experience -- from the Great Depression on the prairies to Flin Flon’s often brutal northern Manitoba winters. This was not a hypothetical or ceremonial toughness. In her seventies, while driving alone on the Thompson highway and having found the facilities at Ponton not to her liking, she ducked into the woods for a rest stop, slipped, fell and broke an ankle. She walked back to her car, finished the drive, and called family from the ER at Thompson General to let them know she’d had a bit of trouble, but hadn’t wanted to bother anyone before getting it looked after.
Joyce is survived by three children Peter, Heather, and Bob whose wife is Leanne; three grandchildren Lenore (Jack McGee), Lindsay (Jason Gigian), and Vivian; and four great-grandchildren Hailey, Wyatt, Emmett, and Huck; sister-in-law Deanna Griffen; and her nieces Darian (Chris Stroud) and Cathy (Chris Carberry). She was predeceased by her husband Gerald Guy Hume.
On September 24, 1920 Joyce was born at Miss Till’s Nursing Home in Winnipeg to Frederic and Martha Griffen. She spent her childhood in Pelly, Saskatchewan and Swan River, Manitoba. She had three siblings, a brother, Richard, and two sisters, Violet and Addie.
Neither of Joyce’s parents were formally educated, but both learned by doing. Like everyone else, they were strapped for cash during the Depression. Joyce’s mother, a resourceful businesswoman who had a hair salon and later managed a grill canned food and did embroidery and crochet for extra income. Her father ordered an arch-top mantel radio from a Chicago paper for $12.50 which, when it arrived, filled the house with jazz and big band music from America. Joyce later interpreted many of those tunes on the piano, which she played with a deft touch and beautiful phrasing until the year she passed away.
Joyce’s post-secondary education, which began in 1936 (two weeks shy of her sixteenth birthday) took her to United College and the University of Manitoba. She graduated in 1940 with multiple awards, including the Fletcher Gold Medal. During that time, she was awarded several scholarships, most notably to the Banff School of Fine Arts. In her fourth year, she received the highest Sociology mark awarded (98%) and tied a francophone student from St. Boniface for the highest mark in French Literature. Also that year, she came within an eyelash of earning a scholarship to study at The Sorbonne in Paris.
Following graduation, a high point of her work as a teacher at Swan River Collegiate was assisting returning World War II vets in picking up the pieces of their lives and resuming their high school studies. She was offered a principalship, but instead chose to apply for work in Flin Flon, Manitoba. It was there that she first saw Guy Hume. “It was,” she said later, “the warm, brown eyes, bushy eyebrows and open smile.” They were married in Swan River on July 2, 1949. Peter arrived in 1951, and Heather followed in 1952. The 50’s and 60’s in Flin Flon were a golden age of sorts for Joyce. No less than four of Guy’s brothers and their wives as well as his sister, Thelma, lived there. They were a powerful social force, an active and boisterous group.
While Joyce ran the household, first on Tweedsmuir and then on Creighton Street, Guy served on City Council (53 or 54) and was involved with the Coop, the Machinists’ Union, the Legion, the Masons and the Shriners, He was also an avid curler, and ran for mayor twice.
Shortly after Bob was born in 1966, Peter and Heather moved away. Peter eventually settled in Thompson, where he worked for Manitoba Hydro. Heather studied at the Ontario College of Art and worked at the Health Sciences Center before eventually settling into a long career at Great West Life. Peter has migrated to Calgary, Heather has recently retired, and Bob now teaches high school overseas.
In 1974, Joyce and Guy began work on a cabin at Bakers Narrows, which they owned and enjoyed for almost a decade. Working feverishly in the short summers, they moved every single piece of the rough lumber used to build it themselves, first hauling it by station wagon from a saw mill on the Old Road, and then hand-carrying it up a steep slope to the hill-top building site. And there, they assembled it, piece by piece, until it was done. If Joyce had a regret, it was that the cabin passed from their hands after so short a time spent enjoying the fruits of their labour.
Following Guy’s sudden death in 1989 while returning to Manitoba from BC, Joyce moved to Winnipeg, and started a new chapter of her life, living first on Fort Street, and eventually taking an apartment at Portsmouth Retirement home. Her sister Violet had died in the 80’s. Her sister Addie had passed away a decade later. Her brother Richard died in 2006. And now, Joyce’s journey has ended.
We, her family, are sad, but, as she would want us to be, proud of our mother for she met death exactly the way she lived life: gracefully and with careful, deliberate dignity. In the last months of her life, Joyce’s thoughts turned inevitably to the completion of her journey. In reference to the large group of Humes that had once been such a central presence in her life, she acknowledged, “I’m the last one.”
There was no greater source of pride or pleasure in Joyce’s life than her children, and the children they had in turn. “I never told myself,” she said, “that there would be such a wonderful feeling of riches when the children are adults, and they distinguish themselves. It is an epiphany. It is serendipity. It is an unforeseen bonanza.”
We deeply appreciate the superlative care Mom received over the last twenty years from Dr. R. Ramgoolam. We would also like to acknowledge the recent compassionate care provided by Doctors Suss, McClure, and Whetter at St. Boniface Hospital, by Kirk and Karin on the Family Medicine ward, and by Karin from Palliative Care.
There will be no funeral service. Joyce’s family will gather informally in her honour over the weekend.

RICHARD WOJCIK'S WINNIPEG FUNERAL HOME - CHARLES PETER OLINYK FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

CHARLES PETER OLINYK

Peacefully on Saturday, January 17, 2015 Charles Peter Olinyk, aged 88 years old, passed away at the Grace Hospital surrounded by his loving family as were his wishes. He waited until everyone made it home.
Charlie leaves to mourn his loving wife of 63 years, Lois Olinyk; his seven children, Rod (Doreen), Charlene (Dave), Julie (John), David, Barry (Jen), Kathy (Barrie) and Rob (Renee). Fifteen grandchildren, Chris, Shawn (Jenna), Kyle, Ashley (Travis), Kayla (Sean), Lyndsay (Derek), Brad (Kate), Whitney, Jeremy, Ryan R, Ryan A, Travis, Samantha, Abbey, and Jesse. Charlie was predeceased by his mother and father, his sisters, Carolyn, Helen, Evelyn, Verna, and his brother Stan.
Charlie was a man of faith and family. He worked for Manitoba Motor Transit, and then Grey Goose Bus Lines before retiring in 1991. In his early years he played in a band where he met his beautiful wife Lois at a dance and fixed her shoe. They married and settled down to raise seven children, living in Oakburn, The Pas, Dauphin, and finally Winnipeg. Faith was important to Charlie, passed down from his own mother where he grew up on a farm in rural Manitoba. He was a volunteer at the John XXlll Roman Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a Eucharistic minister. This is how he lived his life. Charlie was foremost a family man, and loved everything about his children and grandchildren. He played his guitar and sang to them when they were small, and attended numerous hockey games and events for his grandchildren. He prayed for them all daily, and was always ready to provide some advice and just have a visit with them. He was known to smoke a stogie and have a shot with the boys in Rod's backyard and pool. Charlie loved to decorate the house on Addison with Christmas lights, and could be seen each year with a cigarette, frost on his eyeglasses, and a stiff drink to ward off the cold. Charlie loved music, especially country music, and identified with the music of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash as well as many devotional hymns and songs. In his later years, as his mobility decreased, he watched daily mass, and prayed for everyone. This was his legacy; faith and family.
Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Thursday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. at John XXlll Roman Catholic Parish, 3390 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Father Rev. Gerald Langevin presiding.
The family wishes to thank the nurses, and staff at the Grace Hospital for taking care of our father these last six weeks, Father Gerald for visiting and providing spiritual support, Elsie Rosler for bringing communion on Sundays to both Mom and Dad's residences, Susan Zeke at Sturgeon Creek Retirement residence for going out of her way to provide emotional and physical support to both Mom and Dad.
Rest in peace Dad, and may perpetual light shine upon you. You are so loved. We will always remember that "We come from a long line of love." and take care of one another. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation to the John XXlll enhancement fund.

Mom and Dad moved from Altona to Winnipeg in November 1958. She loved her career that started in 1970 and spanned 25 years selling jewelry and watches at Eaton’s. RICHARD WOJCIK'S WINNIPEG FUNERAL HOME - JENNIE LEE PUSIEWICH FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

JENNIE LEE PUSIEWICH
January 19, 1980 – January 9, 2015

Sadly and far too soon, Jennie passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a dignified and courageous fight with cancer.
Jennie will be terribly missed by her mother, Dianne (Ed); father, Bill; brother, Jason (Gabriela); her little nieces, Sadie and Danica; as well as many aunts; uncles; cousins; friends and colleagues. Welcoming her in Heaven are her two sets of grandparents and Jill. She was a loving daughter, sister, auntie, cousin, friend and helper. She was the first to forgive and the first to offer help.
Having a big heart and willingness to help those who needed it most led Jennie to a career as a youth probation officer. Her colleagues were a tight knit group, to which she referred as her work family.
Jennie loved many things in life. She loved to travel and was a sun-seeker, frequenting Mexico and other destinations with her cousins, and Arizona with her Mom and Ed. She also grew up camping, spending summers throughout her childhood with family and friends all over Canada and the United States, and spending much time at the lake in Lac du Bonnet.
A great joy in Jennies life were her animals. Sam, her childhood Cocker Spaniel, and her beloved Springer Spaniel Tucker were companions and friends to her. Tucker, especially, was a great comfort these past weeks. Jennie was especially thankful to the many people who cared for Tucker when she could not.
A celebration of Jennies life will be held on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street.
A sincere thank you to the many doctors, nurses and caregivers who were at Jennies side in her time of need. A special thank you to nurses Michelle and Jennifer and to Dr. Bruce Martin for their compassion and care.
Jennie loved all animals, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to an animal rescue shelter of your choice.

WOJCIK'S FUNERAL CHAPEL - CECILE MAGER FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

CECILE HERMINIE MAGER
(nee LEMIEUX)

Peacefully, surrounded by family it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cecile on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at the age of 97 years, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Left to cherish Cecile’s memory are her son, Marc (Barbara); grandchildren Colette (Ed) Mukanik, Jean-Paul, Andre (Tammy), Allan Linklater Mager, and Thamer Linklater Mager; great- grandchildren Faith and Rylee Mukanik, Taylor Harrap, Meriena Kirsopp, Chantelle (Justin) Sawka, and Mitchel Cheverie.  She was predeceased by her loving husband Victor (Vic) on January 13, 2005 after 64 years of marriage; infant grandson, Michael on March 14, 1967; parents Clara and Joseph; sisters Marguerite, Theresa, and Josie.
Born on October 13, 1917 in Maryfield, Saskatchewan, Cecile obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Manitoba and a Teacher’s Certificate at Manitoba’s Teacher’s College in 1937. She taught school in Fannystelle and Bruxells, Manitoba. On July 14, 1940 Cecile married Victor (Vic) Mager, whom she met while attending University. One son Marc Joseph, born February 5, 1942, blessed this union.  After three years in Winnipeg, Cecile, Vic and Marc moved to Maryfield where they enjoyed farming for seven years. In November 1950 they moved to St. Charles where they purchased a farm. However, that was short lived as the City of Winnipeg spread out to the St. Charles area and large parcels of land were sold for real estate development. They retained their family home and small acreage where they enjoyed gardening and playing with their grandchildren.  Once again their family home was sold to the City of Winnipeg, and they “moved” across the river to 6412 Roblin Boulevard. Sadly on January 13, 2005, Cecile’s loving husband Vic at the age of 88 passed into the Lord’s hands.
Cecile enjoyed the community of St. Charles Parish and accumulated many friends. An active member of St. Charles Parish and a member of the C.W.L., she loved art and had shown her hand in many paintings. Cecile loved to sew, and being only 4’10, her sewing machine was kept well-oiled for shortening all her clothes. Quilting was a great hobby too, Vic built her a rack and Cecile could be found hand stitching and stretching beautiful quilts. She taught her granddaughter, Colette, how to make her first quilt.  In Cecile’s younger years, Barbara was there to take her shopping and peruse the paper for Bingo Halls. She was a devoted mother to Marc, who was always ready to answer Cecile’s first alarm button, no matter the time of day or night. She lavished in the love and care by Colette, teased Jean-Paul with his cooking, and looked forward to an electrical problem that Andre could solve on one of his many visits. She looked forward to the visits from her great-grandchildren and posted their art on her fridge and walls for display. Faith, Rylee and Taylor loved visiting with grandma and all had their own ways of showing their love as did Meriena, Chantelle and Mitchel.  Cecile will be missed.
Mass of the Resurrection will be Celebrated on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 320 St. Charles Street, Winnipeg, MB, with Rev. Fr. Paul Tinguely, presiding.  Interment will follow in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.  Luncheon will be served by the Ladies of St. Charles Parish in the Lower Parish Hall following Mass, all are welcome.
Sincere thanks for the care mom and grandma received from Home Care and Deer Lodge Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind), 1080 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3G 3M3.
