GUSTAV LEMKE
Peacefully
in his sleep, Gustav passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the Health
Sciences Centre at the age of 101 years.
Gus is lovingly remembered by his wife of 70 years, Elsie; two children,
June (Robert) and Gary (Claudia); grandchildren, Christie (Dave), Robert, Kerri (Lance) and Michael (Kirsten);
great-grandchildren Kirsten, Ashley, Aaron and Graham; sisters-in-law Margaret,
Hilda and Emma; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his sisters, Moreah and Theresa; and brothers, Eric and Lloyd.
On May 14, 1911 Gustav was born in Kostopol, Russia. He came to Canada with his mother at the
age of two. The family settled in Morden. A few years later they moved to
Morris. Gus started work at 12 years of age as a farm laborer. Then he went on
to a variety of jobs such as logging, carpentry and the CPR. After the l950
flood, he moved his family to Winnipeg.
Gus worked 25 years as a Civil Servant with the Department of National
Defense. After his retirement, he worked as a painter for the Charleswood
School Board.
Gus
was a long time member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross, and the Imperial
Legion. He loved to garden and was an exemplary “fix-it” man. He was happiest
spending time with his family. Gus will be missed by all.
A
Celebration of Gus’ Life will be held on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in
the Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street. Interment will follow
in Morris, MB.
