Jennifer Alton Shepherd
(nee NASH)
June 4,
1937- September 28, 2014
After a brief battle with cancer at the age of
77 years, Jenny passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014, at home, in the
company of family.
Left to forever cherish Jenny’s memory are her
husband of 58 years, Donald; two children, Lois (Tom), and Tim (Sandra); four
grandchildren, Patrick, Steven, Rachel, and Jenna of Winnipeg; sister Jose
Harris and family of Bournemouth, England.
Jenny was born in Dorset, England in 1937,
where she was raised along with her sister Jose. They were afforded a good
life through the war and post war. Jenny was wed to Donald in a dual
ceremony alongside her cousin Judy and Donald's twin brother Ronald (Pickle),
the event was the talk of the town and made headlines in the local
newspaper. After his release from the RAF Donald pursued a career in
aircraft maintenance which took Jenny to Virginia, USA where they had their
first child Lois. Jenny's heart was still in England so the family moved
back to Poole where she had their second child Tim. Employment
opportunities forced the family to consider options abroad, one of which was a
position with Saunders Aircraft in Gimli, Manitoba. In 1975 the family
immigrated to Canada in the middle of winter, at the time some consideration
was given that this was not a great decision. Jenny was busy making a
homestead in the countryside of Manitoba which was a stark contrast from the
environment she grew up in. Eventually the family moved to Winnipeg to
allow the children to pursue their studies. Jenny was a very vibrant person,
she was very involved in the lives of her family and close friends. She
enjoyed her darts at the Army/Navy and the many tournaments they attended along
with the Air Canada gang. Although she was proud to be a Canadian, Jenny
never forgot her roots and stayed true to her heritage. Jenny fondly
followed the "footy" and her favourite team Man U, she would lament
England's poor side at the World Cup, although it was the conditions that
caused them to lose, not the quality of their play. Jenny was happiest when she
was preparing a meal for family gatherings or hosting an event for their circle
of friends. She had a love for nature and all living things, Jenny got immense
enjoyment out of the ten years spent at the family cabin at Black
Bear. She had the opportunity to travel the world in her retirement years
either cruising the Mediterranean or staying at lavish resorts in the
Caribbean. Even better if she had flown first class.
In accordance with Jenny’s wishes, no formal
Funeral Service will be held. A private family gathering will take place at a
later date.
The family would like to express gratitude to
the staff of 4 South and 3 North of the Grace Hospital for their support and
care throughout this time. Thank you to the Palliative care team for their
support when Jenny was brought home and in particular Jenn who spent her weekend
attending to Jenny's needs. Clare, thanks for being there in our time of
need.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to
Cancer Care Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
