Peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, Jessie Miller passed away at Poseidon Care Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 96 years.

Jessie is survived, and will be sadly missed, by her sons Alan (Alix) and Barry (Linda); son-in-law Garry Bears; grandchildren Donald (Tamara), Kimberly (Tony), Bryan (Sandra), Michael (Carly), Heather (Kris), Delaney (Jon), Jarrett (Carlie), David (Alison), Marc (Kristen), and Christine (Kirby); great-grandchildren Rhyann, Dyson, Antoni, Miguel, April, Matthew, Steven, Sydney, Sean, Kyle, Hudson, Logan, Emmett, Ava, Devon, Mila and Cade. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years, Glen; her daughter Darlene Bears; sisters Raye (Harry) and Marjorie; brother Jack Low (Irene); brother-in-laws Fred (Aileen), Sidney (Lil), and Howard (Amy); sister-in-law Vina Hastings (Jack); and great-grandson Caymin.

On September 26, 1918, Mom was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  She met her future husband, Glen, when she was just 12. They were married 12 years later on August 19, 1942.  Mom lost her love and best friend when Dad passed away in 2010. 

At the time of her marriage, Mom worked in Eaton’s Catalogue.  During the war, she followed our Dad to the west coast where their first child, Alan, was born.  After the war, they lived in Winnipeg’s west end before moving to St. Vital, where Darlene was born and then to Crescentwood where their last child, Barry, was born. Mom and Dad eventually settled in St. James spending many wonderful years on Rita Street.

For many years, Mom was a member of the Women’s Circle of the Home Street Church of Christ Disciples.  She was a member of the YMCA - Y’s Minettes Club rising to the position of Regional Director. She loved bowling in the Wednesday Afternoon Ladies League at Polo Park lanes and remembered the friends Mom made with fondness.  Most summers were spent at the cottage at Whytewold Beach, however, together with Dad, they managed to travel to England, Hawaii, Palm Springs, and across Canada. 

Mom loved to knit and bake.  The house was filled with warm mitts and afghans along with the aroma of fresh chocolate chip cookies and cakes in the cupboard.  She was extremely fond and proud of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For Mom it was all about family. She is now once again reunited with our Dad proving “true love never ends”.

On Friday, February 13, 2015 a private family Funeral Service for Jessie will be held in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue at Sharp Boulevard.

We would like to thank the wonderful “first floor” staff at Poseidon Care Centre.  Your kindness and compassion for our Mother put our minds at ease.

April 14, 1927 - February 2, 2015

Death came quietly to Nel during her afternoon nap on Monday, February 2, 2015. Born in Amsterdam April 14, 1927 she came to Winnipeg in 1953 for a one-year research lab position at the Medical College. There she met Paul. September 1, 1954 they entered a 60 year loving marriage. Grieving now are Paul; five children, Jacob (Cobber), Marke, Sybil, Harry, Alexandra and their spouses; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One daughter, Saskia died in 1990.

Nel was a very active person. She loved raising her children and the many family activities. When the children were older gardening became a passion. She volunteered with a number of community organizations including Winnipeg Horticultural Society (president), Manitoba Regional Lily Society, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and St. Boniface Hospital Women's Auxiliary. She was a lifelong learner (university courses) and a voracious reader. She stimulated her children to follow the example.

Nel always pointed us in new and exciting directions; a camping trip across Canada with six children under the age of 12; then four years later “the Trip” - a camping trip for 22 months across Europe and North Africa.  At Nel’s urging, Paul changed his career to become medical director of palliative care at St. Boniface Hospital, the highlight of his career. It was Nel’s idea to move to an acreage in 1981, “the Willows” where they shared their passion for gardening and then again to move to Victoria Crescent (2001), to continue gardening on a smaller scale. In 2011 Nel recognized the possible challenges in future independence and they moved to Fred Douglas Place (gardening was downsized to indoor bulbs!)

The last year of life was challenging due to health problems and drastic loss of mobility. Death came as a shock for us but as a peaceful release for Nel. She was particularly grateful through the years to Drs. Jack Hildes, P.Mehta, C. Bourque and P. Nemeth, physiotherapist Mary Eaton and more recently home care helpers Carmen, Muriel and Tess.

We bid adieu to a radiant woman: wife, mother, grandmother…She asked bold questions and had demanding standards of behaviour. Her faith moved restlessly between worshipful adoration and theological discontent.

Nel's Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in St. John's Anglican Cathedral, 135 Anderson Avenue with The Very Rev. Paul N. Johnson, presider.

In lieu of flowers, out of compassion for the hungry, and conscious of Nel's experience of the 1944-45 "hunger winter" under Nazi occupation of Holland, please donate to the Canadian Food Grains Bank or to Winnipeg Harvest.

Carole lived life with enthusiasm and joie de vivre. She sparkled, bringing smiles and laughter wherever she went. She lived and worked in Winnipeg all her life, where she met her beloved husband Gord. They were inseparable.

For many years, Carole and Gord were Texas snowbirds, enjoying the winters away, meeting old friends and making new ones. She left us on the cold winter morning of February 2, 2015.

Carole loved golf and curling. Even in hospital, she wanted to know the curling results. Her home and tending her garden were passions, and she often chastised the rabbits for eating her plants.

Most of all, Carole loved her family. The only child of Wilf and Edith Mills of Winnipeg, she grew up with cousins Ed Ledger, Rick Ledger, Donnamay McNeill, John Ledger and Jo-Ann Johnson. They were always in her heart.

Carole has gone to be with her much-loved parents. Her dear husband Gordon survives her, along with her cousins and their families in Winnipeg, Seattle, San Gabriel, Mercer Island, and Salem, Oregon, as well as step-children Todd and Marianne, Robin and Derek, Grant and Ann, and their families in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Brampton, and Puerto Vallarta.

At Carole’s request, no Funeral Service will be held. A Private family internment will be held at a later date.

We will miss you Carole.

On Wednesday, January 28, 2015, Frank Searle passed away unexpectedly at the Grace General Hospital, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at age 61 years. 

Frank will be sadly missed by his sisters, Cathy, Mary (Gerard), and Jacqueline (Joe); nieces Amanda, Shayla, and Alia; along with great nephew Jordan; and great niece Taliyah. He was predeceased by his parents Jacqueline and Gerry; and brother David. 

A private Funeral Service for family and close friends will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

CHARLES “PAT” PATRICK MCDONALD

October 14, 1958 – January 30, 2015

With his family by his side, Pat (Charles Patrick) McDonald passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2015 after battling ALS for just over a year. His spirit was strong and he fought until the very end. We know he’s in the Salisbury House in heaven, looking down on his family, heart overflowing with love.

Pat was loved by so many and will live on in our memories: whether it was a trip to the beach with all his nieces and nephews at the cabin in Grindstone, dancing at his daughter’s wedding, playing at the park with his grandsons, his work at Canadian Linen, cheering at Jets games, throwing a baseball around or swimming underwater for what seemed like miles, he’ll never be forgotten.

Pat’s four daughters Jessica (Justin), Rachel and her two sons Jack and Van, Justine and Alainna will carry on his legacy with the help of their mother, Cara McDonald. All his siblings, Dave, Robert and Lori; mother Bettiann and father Jack will cherish their memories of him and in-laws Joan and Paul, George and Mary-Jo, Lisa, Kelly, and his many nieces and nephews will love him forever.

On Thursday, February 5, 2015 Pat’s Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive.

Our Blessed Mother and her angels came down on Thursday, January 29, 2015 to carry Angelo Mingotti to meet his Creator.

Angelo is survived by his loving wife, Yolanda; daughter Julie (Bruce); sons Richard (Sophita) and Paul (Robin); grandchildren Michael (Lisa), Alana, Ashley, Jakkrin, Nathan, Jerita, and Kyle. Also, in Italy, he is survived by his sister, Lucia; brother Attilio (Maria); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Paolo; mother Maria; and brother Domenico (Nino).

           In 1926, Angelo was born in Palazzolo, sull'Oglio, Brescia, Italy. He immigrated to Canada in 1951. He had many different jobs, finally settling in with the Canadian Pacific Railway as a mechanist, where Dad worked for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He volunteered and was president of the Holy Rosary Bingo Club for many years. He was also an avid gardener – Dad loved to see his tomatoes and lettuce grow. He loved to walk…everywhere, if he wasn’t walking, he was riding his bicycle. 

          Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue. A private family Entombment will be held in the Queen of Heaven Mausoleum in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue. 

            The family would like to thank the fifth floor staff at Poseidon Care Centre who made Dad’s final days comfortable.

RICHARD WOJCIK'S WINNIPEG FUNERAL HOME - DOROTHY LEES FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

DOROTHY GRACE LEES

On Wednesday, January 28, 2015, Dorothy Lees, age 95, passed away peacefully at the Simkin Centre. 

Left to cherish Dorothy’s memory are her three children, Georgia Klass (Daniel), Virginia Lees (Ron Kibbins) and J.D. Lees (Ruth); nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was predeceased in 2010 by her husband of 60 years, Danny Lees.

 Dorothy grew up in St. James on Oakdale Place. She attended Wesley College, now University of Winnipeg, where she earned her BA. She worked in the Budget Office at Eatons until her marriage to Donald Maclean in 1943. Captain Maclean, a paratrooper, was killed on D-Day in France. Within a short time after his death, both Dorothy’s parents had also passed away.

In 1950, Dorothy married Danny Lees on the day he graduated from Medical School. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother who, together with Danny, provided their children with a happy, stable, and carefree home environment. She was self-disciplined and organized, and modeled doing what was "right" rather than what was "easy." She was a highly intelligent woman with an amazing memory, able to help her kids with algebra and geometry problems right up to the end of their high school. 

Summers were spent tending to her family at their cottage at Victoria Beach. Dorothy traveled twice a year to visit her best friend and sister-in-law Margie Ross (Maclean) at Great Hopes Farm in Michigan, or at The Anchorage in Coral Gables, Florida.

Dorothy loved animals, and the Lees home was never without a dog and at least one cat. She loved her home on Riverside Drive where she enjoyed feeding and watching the wild animals, and she spent many happy times with Danny at "the farm" in Prawda, where she gathered wild berries and baked them into scrumptious pies.

Dorothy's motto was, "Chase out the bad thought and put in the good thought." She truly lived by her motto, even during the last seven years of Dan's life, when he was afflicted with Alzheimer's and Dorothy supplied him with love and care every single day.

At Dorothy's request, there will be no funeral service. 

The family is grateful to the wonderful people at the Simkin Centre that have cared for Mum with such kindness for the last three years of her life.
