I just have to comment about your ad in today's paper.  It is very, very good and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing this.  It is a dramatic statement and I hope it gets the message out to all those who text and/or drink and drive.

An acqaintance recently had a very close shave on the road, no texting or drinking involved, but a brush with death.  It made all of us more aware of the danger, fragility and preciousness of life.

Of course, you see this every day in your profession.

Peacefully on Monday, November 11, 2013 Margaret Wilson passed away at the Concordia Personal Care Home with family at her side.

Margaret was born in Brandon, MB and raised in Rapid City MB along with four siblings: Bob, Odie, Audrey and Bonnie. She eventually moved to Winnipeg and called it home.

Left to cherish Margaret’s memory are her daughters Dianne Brennen, Dawn Tucker (Rex), Leslie Wilson (Brian) and Susan Gooding. She also leaves behind sisters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and friends.

Margaret loved her career as a Paralegal and was well respected by the lawyers and peers at the various law firms where she was employed. Margaret and her husband Bill enjoyed their many road trips in Canada and the USA, and made many friends along the way. Mom was a very strong and independent lady and even when Bill passed away in November 2003 she continued to have a positive outlook on life. She continued her outings to the McPhillips Street Station, where she also had many friends.

The family would like to thank the staff on the third floor at Concordia Place for the care she received the five years she lived there. Also a special thanks to Lucelyn S, who was her personal caregiver and was like family.

June 24, 1938 – November 9, 2013

Suddenly, but not unexpectedly after a lengthy illness, Dave left us on Saturday, November 9, 2013. 

Dave was a big hearted man who was always there to help his friends and family. His ready smile and sense of humour were contagious. Known as Rocket or Archie to his oldest pals he was a guy anyone would enjoy having a beer with.  Dave was an entrepreneur known more for the heart he showed in his many attempts than his successes. He was a great father who modeled integrity, and composure especially for his kids and their friends who in their teen years had a habit of crashing his cars and boat.  “As long as you are okay, that is all that matters.” His pride in his children also showed from behind the boards when he was coaching hockey, or behind the camera when videotaping many synchro swim meets. His support was unwavering. 

A stroke 17 years ago changed the Dave we knew, into someone less lively who entered retirement suffering from depression. As he slowly withdrew from all but his immediate family, we loved him just as much and did manage to coax out the old Dave once in a while. The recent loss of his wife Elaine of 52 years and his own cancer diagnosis just over a year ago were very tough on him. Through this period his happy places were Lake of the Woods and with family and especially following his grandchildren in sports, school and the joys of being kids. 

Dave leaves behind his three children, their spouses and 6 grandchildren who will all miss ‘Pops” greatly: Greg Rogers, Kathy, Kieran and Nick; Jeff Rogers, Tracy, McKenzie and Harrison; Janelle and Alan Franklin, Reese and Mathea. Dave also leaves his younger sister, Joy who has been a source of support throughout his life. Our family is grateful to Dr. Karpinski, who provided excellent care to a challenging patient through his last two years. 

            Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, 255 Stafford Street, Winnipeg.

Peacefully at home, on Saturday, November 9, 2013, with family members by her side, our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Joan Laverne Warrener (nee Challoner), went home to her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ at the age of 80 years. 

Deeply loved, Joan will be sadly missed by her loving husband Jim; son Don (Sarah); and beloved granddaughter, Melissa. Also left to cherish her memory are her brother, Bob (Myrt) Challoner of Summerland B.C. and family; as well as many beloved family members and dear friends.

Joan grew up in the small farming community of Norquay, Saskatchewan where she made many life-long friends and graduated from nearby Sturgis High School. She continued on to attend the School of Nursing at the Winnipeg General Hospital, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1954 with the Alumnae Award for Proficiency in Clinical Nursing. While working as a nurse in Killarney, Manitoba, Joan met a young engineer named Jim Warrener. They were married on November 8, 1958, at St. Jude’s Anglican Church and spent 55 beautiful years together. Joan and Jim have been active members of St. Saviour’s Anglican Church for over 45 years.

Mom’s incredible faith, and her compassion and concern for others pervaded all aspects of her life. Her cooking skills were legendary and the high point of our family celebrations. No gathering was complete without one of Joan’s delicious pies, cakes, cookies or cinnamon buns!

Joan’s greatest joy was spending time with family and friends, most especially special time spent with her granddaughter, Melissa. Many hours spent cooking and baking together, and sharing love and laughter will be treasured by us all.

On Friday, November 22, 2013 Joan’s Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in St. Saviour’s Anglican Church, 690 Munroe Avenue.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Rev. Simon Blaikie, Dr. A. Kong, as well as all of the staff of the W.R.H.A. Palliative Care Program for their care and compassion. A special thank you to Ann, whose faithful care will always be remembered.

Suddenly, on Saturday, November 9, 2013, Claude passed away in the arms of his loving wife, Vi.

Left to lovingly miss Claude is his wife Violet (nee Tappin); sons Alan (Linda), Jeffrey (Sherry); daughter Beverley (Brent) Mackie; grandchildren, Dennis (Jessica), Sarah (Evan), Scott, Emily, Carly, Jordan, Tayvia (Lee); one great grandchild Alayna; as well as many cousins with whom he had maintained a close relationship. He was predeceased by his parents Cassandra and Herbert Gaye.

Claude and Vi met in grade eleven and were married in Regina in 1949. They moved to Winnipeg in 1959 and raised their family there. Claude worked as an Underwriter in the General Insurance Industry throughout his career. After retirement he and Vi toured the East and West coasts of Canada and the United States, before settling in the Peachland/Summerland area of the Okanagan Valley for a period of 21 years. They returned to Winnipeg in 2010 to be closer to their children and reside in St. James/Assiniboia.

Very community minded, Claude willingly gave of his time and talents wherever he resided. He was a member of the Sturgeon Creek Masonic Lodge and St. James Chapter #25 Order of The Eastern Star.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday, November 15th, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in the Assiniboia Chrisitian Centre, 3390 Portage Avenue @ Rouge Road.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Victoria (Vicki) Jowett on the morning of November 8, 2013 at the Victoria General Hospital, at the age of 86 years.

Vicki is survived by her children; Diane Roberts (Frank), Brian Jowett (Cheryl), Gordon Jowett (Kathy), and Barry Jowett, sisters; Eunice Whitney of Kelowna, BC, Winnifred Poulin of Edmonton, Luverne Spence (Don) of Winnipeg, and her grandchildren; David, Anne Marie (Brett), Lisa, Michelle, Lee, and Michael along with very special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Russell and brothers; Cyril, Raymond, and Johnny Hicks.

Vicki spent her childhood in St. Vital and lived for over 50 years in Fort Rouge with her husband Russell, where she worked at Scott’s Grocery followed by many years as a cashier for Safeway at Kylemore and Osborne, as well as River and Osborne, until she retired in 1992.

In 2003 she moved back to St. Vital where she lived with her son Barry who has been constantly at her side during her many weeks in hospital.

Vicki avidly followed Coronation Street and rarely missed and an episode. She attended Faith Lutheran Church and belonged to the ladies quilting group together with her dear friend Marta Arndt, who also recently passed away. She enjoyed Friday bingo with Marta and her niece Joan Huth.

She cherished time with family in and around Winnipeg as well as visits with her sister Eunice and niece Louise in Kelowna. Vicki and Eunice enjoyed many wonderful trips and cruises together. She loved to reminisce about these happy times.

Vicki was uplifted by the many visits from family and friends during her time in hospital.

The family is very grateful for the excellent care she received at Victoria General Hospital from the kind and caring staff of 4^th Floor North.

Funeral services will take place at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota St., Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.

            Karen's family were her life’s passion giving every moment of every day from her loving generous heart. To those fortunate enough to have been part of her essence, she gave of herself unconditionally. Karen had a big heart, volunteering at the Grace Hospital Hospice for over 10 years. She also participated in the “Never Die Alone” program, sitting with patients during their final hours providing comfort and support.

            Karen has left behind many broken hearts but also many fond memories. No words can express how much you will be missed by so many that you touched during your life too short. You were always an Angel walking among us dear Karen. “Love You Much”

Peacefully, with her family by her side, our mother, Vera Popescul, went home to her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. On Tuesday, November 5, 2013 after a brief illness, Vera passed away at the Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 86 years.

Left to cherish Vera’s memory are her children, Donald James Popescul, Catherine Ann Stuart, Linda Mae Bartlette, Gordon George Popescul and Rosemary Hamulka; only brother Nick Daniels of Regina, Saskatchewan. She was loved and will be missed by her grandchildren, Shannon and Mike Thuriche, Anne-Marie Ginoudis, Whitney and Patty Stuart, Russ and Kathy Stuart, Corban and Taylor Bartlette, Jessica and Veronica Hamulka. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Victoria and Michael Thuriche, Mackenzie Leanne Stuart and Amelia Jean Hamulka. She was predeceased by her husband George Popescul.

Vera was a long-time resident of Winnipeg where she worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Health Science Respiratory Rehabilitation. Before moving to Winnipeg she lived in Regina and was a long-time member of the Daughters of the Canadian-Romanian Club. Through the Christian Children’s Fund. Vera sponsored three children in various parts of the world.

Retirement years for Vera were spent enjoying her grandchildren and her garden. Our mother has a green thumb and took pride in watching both her garden and her grandchildren grow. The produce she shared with everyone. Vera always did small things with great love and big things with humility.

We would like to thank the staff on the 3^rd floor, unit 5 for all the care they provided to our mom during her final days.

Funeral services will be held at The Church of the Rock, 1397 Buffalo Place at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 12, 2013, with a private interment at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society in honour of Mom’s love of animals.

Hi Richard, I called you earlier today about the passing of Clark Braun.  My name is Mary Konstantopoulos I handle all the corporations financial needs and I will be calling you on Tuesday to see about a flower arrangement I need to  send for the family from all of us here. Some of us who have found out are saddened to hear about Clarke's passing. He was such a very nice man and he will be missed a lot. Sandy was sent home Friday, Dec.6th from the hospital from surgery on her knees and he passed away day before, so my heart goes out to her. I don't know if you know all this but I hope the family has informed you. I just want to make sure she will have a safe,comfortable, easy access to and from the viewing,funeral etc. I know the family will do this but you were there for us way back and we will never forget what you did so I want them to have that care too.
 
It was 1996, you worked at Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1858 Portage Ave. W. my uncle Demetrios Jim Konstantopoulos passed away on Feb.2nd (Groundhog Day).  He was in the Wpg. Free Press Feb.4th & Feb.7th. You took very good care of us. You were so kind,caring, and compassionate. You made us feel at ease and did not have to worry about anything. My daughter Anne 6 years at the time(her godfather) last minute freak accident broke her elbow. You had taken us to Children's Hospital, picked us up when we were done and went to the viewing. You had also given us a BIG gold bible. From losing my father in law then few years later Uncle Jim you were amazing. You had then a passion for what you believed in within your heart and it showed. I had sent you a message back then to open your own business and I am glad you did. We see you and your family in the paper etc. and are so happy you are doing well. I highly recommend you to all that I know when in need of your services etc. You bring peace and comfort to those in need and their difficult times, your caring is genuine.

It is with a heavy heart and infinite sadness that we have lost the matriarch of our family.

After Mom's debilitating stroke in 2008 she was still able to return to her apartment with me as her caregiver.

Mom loved to go out so we want to thank Handi-Transit for making our many outings possible.

I also want to thank my Uncle Bob and my son Alan for all the time they spent visiting with Mom.

Mom was predeceased by our Dad, Gordon J. Milne; her first-born son Gordon G. Milne; her sister Olive Ross from Marathon, ON and her sister Elva Smith from Mississauga, ON.

Left to mourn Mom is her daughter Bonnie Frandsen; her son James Milne and his wife Rita from Barrhead, AB; her brother Robert Cook from Winnipeg and all her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

As per Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and her ashes will be placed in her Mom's grave at the cemetery in Brandon.

EDWARD A. (TED) SPEERS, Ph.D., P. Eng.

1918 – 2013

Ted passed away in Winnipeg Sunday morning, November 3, 2013, leaving his loved and loving wife and devoted companion of 53 years, Jean, their son Chris (Tina), of Calgary, Alberta, and daughter Elizabeth (Mike) of Beaconia, Manitoba. Ted was very proud of his children’s independence, their abilities and their determined ambition.

Throughout his life Ted had an overwhelming curiosity and desire to research multitudes of subjects that caught his attention, and he had a very early interest in research and development and environmental sustainability in both industry and government, which led him to his choices in education and employment.

Ted was born, brought up and had early education in Brandon, Manitoba, and he attended Brandon University where he was granted a one-year exchange scholarship to the University of British Columbia. Ted returned to Brandon to complete his B.A. in Arts and Science, then attended UBC once again for a BASc. and an MASc. in Chemical Engineering.

Returning to Manitoba in 1960, Ted continued his interest in research, combining self-employed work and education by achieving a Ph.D. at the University of Manitoba in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, which led to consulting work in Ukraine and Russia.

Ted’s community activities were broad in scope. Examples are: a founding member of the Biomass Energy Institute; President of the Alumni Association of Professional Engineers of Manitoba, and subsequently a member of the Senate at the University of Manitoba; founding member and director of the Solar Energy Society of Canada and of the Canadian Hydrogen Association; a board member of the

Recycling Council of Manitoba.

            A private memorial service was held for Ted on Thursday, November 7.

The family thanks the health-care professionals of WFPS and Grace Hospital.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of mother, grandma, great nana after a long struggle with many health issues.

Left to cherish Mom’s memory are daughter Valerie and Kerry Young; grandson Randy and Marlene Young; great granddaughters Keely and Tawny; as well as brother Robert Alexander; two nieces Cindy and Robert, Elisa; two great nieces Shanaya and Kerri all from Toronto.

Mom worked hard. She loved her jobs as a Credit Manager at Standard Plumbing, Winnipeg, The Vancouver Sun, Key Pacific Publishers, Victoria. She retired at 68 years young and always wished she could go back to work.

In compliance with Mom’s wishes, there will not be a Funeral Service.

MARY- RUTH “MIMI” GWENDOLINE TRAINOR

Born Mary-Ruth (Mimi) Gwendoline Pemberton-Smith, February 19, 1934, to Lucille and George Pemberton-Smith, in Montreal, Quebec, and died November 1, 2013 in Winnipeg.  She grew up in Westmount, Quebec, and graduated in Nursing from St. Mary’s Hospital in 1954. She obtained a degree in Public Health Nursing at the University of Western Ontario. Mimi practiced a variety of nursing specialties which included a period in which she monitored the lives of psychiatric patients discharged from the Ontario Hospital System. In 1962, she came to Winnipeg to establish rehabilitation courses at the newly-constructed Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital (now part of Health Sciences Centre). She was married to Dr. Michael Trainor in 1965, and had one son, Brian. She was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her brothers David and Richard, her nieces and nephews and their families, her husband, son, and her beloved 7-year-old grandson Brendan.

Mimi had diverse interests and talents. She taught Sunday school, participated in the establishment of the 158th Scout Troop in Winnipeg, served on the board of the Manitoba Opera Association. She maintained her competence in the French language through Alliance Francais and subsequently participated in the activities of a conversational French group for many years. She was a talented artist, producing exquisitely fine embroidery, many sewn garments, and a variety of stained-glass windows. She travelled widely, which included several bicycle tours through Europe, the last of which she completed when in her 60s. 

Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Friday, November 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, Winnipeg with Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant, presiding. Interment will follow in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.
