RICHARD WOJCIK'S WINNIPEG FUNERAL HOME - ALVIN KNIGHT FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

ALVIN KNIGHT

On Sunday, November 30, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer, Alvin Knight went to be with his Lord and Savior, at the age of 80 years.
Left to forever cherish Alvin’s memory are his loving wife, Shirley; sons Rick (Linda), Brian (Shauna), Don (Mary) and their families; brother Jack; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers; and a sister.
Dad was born at home near Swan River, Manitoba, to Edward and Cynthia Knight. He was the second youngest with one sister, June, and four brothers, Edward, Dan, Neil and Jack. He was working as a deliveryman and it was during this time that he met Mom. They were married on September 1, 1956 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They moved to Brandon in 1960, where Alvin worked for Weston Bread and later with Pacific Milk.  Both Mom and Dad were very involved with the church and enjoyed working with the teens. Camping and waterskiing led to many great stories. While with Pacific Milk, he was transferred to Calgary in 1969, where he later started a steam cleaning business. The yearning to farm was strong and that became a reality in 1972.  By packing all their possessions into a big old grain truck, they journeyed to a run down farm at Bunclody, Manitoba.  With much hard work from the whole family, a dairy barn was built and the farm was improved.  In 1984, they started a new chapter of their lives after acquiring the Morden Dairy Queen.
Dad was a determined project manager.  If he was not finishing a project, he was planning a new one. Dad reveled in the challenges of building a strong business, seen by results throughout his life. His success as a Pacific Milk salesman early in his years, then building a dairy farm, and later expanding the Dairy Queen, are all results of Dad’s hard work and determination. After selling the Dairy Queen, he wasn’t quite ready to retire, so he took his Class 1 and started trucking with EBD.  When Dad did retire, he could not sit around and read the newspaper all day.  He turned his energy for projects and his compassion for others into his Helping Hands projects for family and friends.
Dad loved life. His philosophy was that a stranger was just a friend he hadn’t met yet. Travelling to new places with Mom and meeting people were highlights for Dad, along with family barbeques. Nothing was better than having family around.
Alvin’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. in Grant Memorial Baptist Church, 877 Wilkes Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, with Pastor George Bell, presider.  Ash interment will be held at a later date in Hillside Cemetery, Morden, MB.
The family would like to express our deep gratitude to Dr. Kumar, Rose and staff at Cancer Care, and the ER staff at Grace Hospital for your wonderful care and compassion during a difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9, or a charity of your choice.
